We are looking to appoint a Clinical Educator who will contribute to the delivery of high-quality teaching of theory and practice to the Pre-Registration Nurse Degree programmes. The Clinical Educator post works with student nurses within their clinical placement settings, on study days and works closely with clinical partners as required, to ensure an optimal student experience.

You will work with the programme leader, academics and practice partners to support students and will attend meetings across the partnership locations. They will be expected to contribute towards development, delivery and monitoring of students on the programme. This will include supporting students and their supervisors in their clinical areas to achieve a high level of clinical care through the practice and attainment of clinical competence, and through the application of theory into practice.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

  • Work in Partnership with health and social care providers to ensure placement areas are appropriately prepared to NMC standards to receive and supervise student nurses.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of the mechanism for assessing the clinical skills/competence of student nurses in conjunction with partner organisations.
  • Promote evidence-based practice.
  • Act as a role model to our students and be a resource for advice, support and guidance.
  • Work with health and social care providers to ensure the clinical governance processes encompass measures to support the education of student nurses.
  • Develop effective networks with other health and social care providers, for sharing information expertise, and good practice.
  • Act in accordance with requirements of the NMC professional registration body.
  • Undertake professional development opportunities in order to maintain professional registration.
  • Ensure and promote the maintenance of a safe, clean and secure working environment for our students.
  • Supervise and maintain accurate records using partner organisations’ documentation and electronic staff records (ESR) where required.
  • Raise and escalate concerns regarding any issues with the students as per University and health and social care providers policies.
  • Undertake, and report on the evaluation of placement areas.
  • Maintain accurate records relating to engagement with students.
  • Facilitate and deliver education within both the university and health and social care provider environments.
  • Take the lead on the preparation and delivery of placement modules in conjunction with the Placement Lead
  • Contribute towards student recruitment by participating in applicant interviews and other recruitment activities.
  • Support staff to deliver evidence-based practice and research activities to further enhance patient care.
  • Support and guide Practice Assessors and Practice Supervisors in the workplace ensuring continuity in assessment and addressing inconsistencies.
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of educational programmes and placements to ensure clinical areas are able to achieve and maintain an accredited educational learning environment for all students, registered and unregistered staff.
  • Provide effective leadership with regard to the development of student nurses.
  • As a member of staff you will be encouraged to make ethical decisions in your role, embedding the University sustainability strategy into your working activities wherever possible.

Essential criteria

  • Hold current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as a Registered Nurse (Adult) (assessed at: application)
  • Hold a first degree in a relevant Health Care /Nursing subject (assessed at: application)
  • Hold or be working towards a Masters degree in a relevant subject (assessed at: application)
  • Proven teaching ability in a practice setting with experience of providing mentorship /practice based supervision / assessment to students in practice (assessed at: application/interview)
  • Experience of teaching in a classroom setting and have, or be working towards a teaching qualification (assessed at: application/interview)
  • Have knowledge of and can demonstrate an understanding of the relevant NMC standards for pre-registration nursing programmes including SSSA. (assessed at: application/interview)
  • Proven ability to assess and organise resources, plan and progress case work in a timely manner and adhere to strict deadlines. (assessed at: application/interview)
  • Ability to identify and manage student issues, working in partnership with the academic team and healthcare providers. (assessed at: application/interview)
  • Ability to manage difficult situations and ability to know when to escalate concerns. (assessed at: application/interview)
  • Hold excellent interpersonal and influencing skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with students, academics and health care providers both verbally and written. (assessed at: application/interview)
