Job summary

Breedon Group is seeking a Civils Chargehand to join the Hebrides-based Contracting team. You will support the Foreperson with daily coordination, organise the squad, and lead on safety, quality and productivity on site across various shifts, including night work where required.

The role is hands-on, involves outdoor work, site travel and driving a full UK licence. The team focuses on surfacing operations with adherence to company procedures and safe systems of work.

Qualifications

• Experience in surfacing, highways or construction environments.
• Good practical knowledge of asphalt surfacing operations.
• Experience guiding other team members.
• Strong teamwork and communication skills.
• Excellent organisation and prioritisation.
• Strong health and safety understanding.
• Positive attitude; lead by example.
• Flexible to work across sites and shifts.
• Full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Support the Civils Foreperson with day-to-day running and coordination.
• Act as a point of contact for operatives on site.
• Organise squad and allocate tasks to progress work.
• Support safe operation of plant and equipment.
• Ensure materials, plant, PPE available for the works.
• Lead site briefings and toolbox talks; communicate site requirements.
• Monitor activities and report safety/quality/progress issues to Foreperson.
• Carry out routine checks of plant, equipment and PPE; report defects.
