Job summary

Breedon Group plc is seeking reliable Surfacing Operatives for our Central East Scotland team. You will operate and support asphalt paving machinery, travelling to sites across the region to deliver high-quality road resurfacing work.

The roles require night shifts and a flexible approach to hours and locations. Full training will be provided, with opportunities for long-term career progression in a safety-focused environment.

Qualifications

• Essential: good teamwork and communication, safety‑conscious, flexible hours.
• Desirable: CSCS card, full UK driving licence, prior surfacing/construction experience.

Responsibilities

• Assist with laying, raking, levelling and finishing asphalt materials.
• Support operation of surfacing plant, tools and equipment.
• Carry out site preparation and general labouring duties.
• Collaborate with Foreperson and squad to complete projects safely and on time.
• Perform routine checks and basic maintenance of plant and PPE.
• Follow site instructions and maintain a clean, safe environment.
• Be flexible to work at different sites and night shifts when required.

Position Overview: We are looking for reliable and motivated Surfacing Operatives to join our growing surfacing team, based in Central East Scotland (Edinburgh, Fife and Tayside). In these hands‑on roles, you will be responsible for operating and supporting the use of asphalt paving machinery.

We are recruiting for the following positions:

• Screwman
• Paver Operator
• Roller Operators
• Banksman
• 3CX Operator
• Labourer

The role involves working outdoors on a variety of road surfacing and highway maintenance projects, travelling to sites across the region, and collaborating closely with colleagues to ensure work is completed safely, on time, and to the required quality standards. Nightshift working is a key requirement of this position.

These roles require flexibility, as nightshift working is essential.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with the laying, raking, levelling, and finishing of asphalt materials
• Support the operation of surfacing plant, tools, and equipment
• Carry out site preparation and general labouring duties before, during, and after surfacing works
• Work closely with the Foreperson and wider surfacing squad to complete projects safely and efficiently
• Conduct routine checks and basic maintenance of plant, equipment, and PPE
• Follow site instructions, safe systems of work, and company procedures at all times
• Maintain a clean and safe working environment
• Report any safety concerns, incidents, defects, or near misses promptly
• Work flexibly across different sites and shifts, including night work where required

Essential

Desirable

• CSCS card
• Full UK driving licence
• Previous experience in surfacing, construction, highways, or a similar environment
