Job description

How you'll make a difference

As a Civil Enforcement Officer, you will help keep our communities safe and accessible by ensuring parking restrictions are followed and limited parking spaces are used appropriately. Through effective parking enforcement, you will support the free flow of traffic and improve access for residents, visitors and businesses. You will also help ensure designated parking spaces remain available for those who need them most, including Blue Badge holders and other vulnerable road users.

What you will be doing
  • It will be your responsibility to enforce parking restrictions and provide advice to motorists, issuing penalty charge notices (PCNs) where appropriate, including within residents' parking schemes.
  • You will identify and respond to instances of non-compliance in line with council policies, regulations and codes of practice, providing clear and accurate information to customers.
  • Carrying out patrols on foot, you will monitor parking compliance and issue PCNs, whilst having opportunities to enforce parking and moving traffic offences using the council's CCTV enforcement vehicle.
  • You will prepare accurate reports and, when required, attend hearings as a witness in support of enforcement activities.
  • You may be required to act on other environmental enforcement matters encountered during patrols, such as littering, following established procedures and guidance.
What we need from you
  • As this is a public-facing role, you will have experience of working directly with customers and be confident dealing with a wide range of people and situations.
  • It is essential that you have strong communication skills, along with the ability to remain impartial, use your judgement and respond professionally to changing circumstances.
  • You will be able to demonstrate effective problem-solving skills and a commitment to delivering a high-quality service to the public.
  • Ideally, having knowledge of parking enforcement legislation would be helpful, however not essential as full training is provided.
What you need to know
  • Your shift pattern will be 8am – 6pm, 4 days on 4 days off, including weekends and bank holidays.
  • Enhancements for weekends and bank holiday working applies.
  • You should be comfortable working outside in all weather.
  • You will be expected to travel throughout the authority and surrounding area so you must have a full, valid driving licence. You will have access to a South Gloucestershire Council fleet vehicle during your operational hours, although most enforcement duties will be conducted via foot patrols.

Interviews will be held on 19th November 2026.
