Job summary

Derby City Council is seeking an organised Education Support Officer to join the Inclusion and School Attendance Service on a fixed-term basis. You will provide administrative support, handle enquiries, and maintain accurate records to help ensure children access full-time education.

The role requires strong communication, confidentiality, and proficiency with Microsoft Office. Hybrid working is available, with 37 hours per week and a salary between £38,510 and £41,177 per year.

Qualifications

  • Recent administrative experience in a busy office environment.
  • Experience in an administrative or customer support role, ideally within a local authority or public sector environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel, to produce and maintain documents.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and attention to detail.
  • Understanding of confidentiality when dealing with service user information.
  • Ability to learn new IT systems quickly.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day administrative support to the team, including handling enquiries by phone and email, preparing documents and maintaining accurate records.
  • Use council systems to input, update and retrieve case information, ensuring data is accurate, timely and handled confidentially.
  • Use Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word and Excel, to produce letters, reports, spreadsheets and maintain tracking systems.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information in line with Council policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, partners and members of the public, responding politely and professionally to enquiries.
  • Support in implementing and issuing Attendance and Holiday Penalty Notices and preparation of legal documentation
  • Support in tracking and logging of children missing education
  • Logging of Police Notifications
  • Support in other areas of the service when required

About you
  • Recent administrative experience in a busy office environment.
  • Previous experience in an administrative or customer support role, particularly within a local authority or public sector environment, is desirable but not essential
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to respond politely and patiently to service users
  • Experience of working with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel, to produce, update and maintain a range of documents and spreadsheets
  • The ability to manage competing priorities and maintain attention to detail.
  • An understanding of the need for confidentiality when dealing with service user information.
  • An ability to learn new IT systems quickly
