Job summary

Derby City Council is seeking an Accountancy Officer to join the Capital Accountancy Team at The Council House. You’ll develop your skills in budgeting, financial monitoring and reporting, helping to deliver sound financial decisions for residents.

You’ll bring relevant accounting experience, strong Excel skills and the ability to work with multiple IT systems, with a career-graded structure offering progression and a permanent 37-hour week.

Qualifications

  • Relevant accounting and budgeting experience.
  • GCSE Maths and English or equivalent.
  • Experience in a finance environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of the Revenue and Capital Programme, ensuring projects are financially sound.
  • Provide high-quality financial monitoring and reporting for senior officers and budget holders.
  • Work with service managers and project leads to promote strong financial management and accountability.
  • Support the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and outturn positions.
  • Identify financial risks and opportunities, contributing to solutions.
  • Assist in the management of external funding streams, ensuring compliance with funding conditions.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of financial processes, systems and reporting.
  • Support the production of year-end accounts and statutory returns.
  • Gain experience in capital finance, including re-profiling and funding strategies.
  • Support the Medium Term Financial Plan (MTFP) and wider Corporate Finance Team objectives.

What you’ll be doing
  • Play a key role in supporting the delivery of the Council’s ambitious Revenue and Capital Programme, ensuring projects are financially sound and deliver real benefits for residents.
  • Provide high-quality financial monitoring and reporting, enabling senior officers and budget holders to make informed, strategic decisions.
  • Work in partnership with service managers and project leads to promote strong financial management and accountability across a diverse portfolio of capital schemes.
  • Support the preparation of budgets, forecasts, and outturn positions, ensuring alignment with corporate priorities and funding strategies.
  • Identify financial risks and opportunities, proactively contributing to solutions that maximise resources and maintain programme delivery.
  • Assist in the management of external funding streams, ensuring compliance with funding conditions and key deadlines.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of financial processes, systems, and reporting, driving efficiency and best practice.
  • Support the production of year-end accounts and statutory returns, maintaining high standards of accuracy and transparency.
  • Gain valuable experience in capital finance, including areas such as re-profiling, slippage, and funding strategies, within a supportive, career-graded environment.
  • Support the council in delivering a balanced Medium Term Financial Plan (MTFP)
  • Support the wider objectives of the Corporate Finance Team including budget setting, audit programme and closure of the accounts
About you
  • Relevant accounting and budgeting experience.
  • Relevant budget monitoring experience.
  • Experience of working in a finance environment.
  • Experience of working with multiple IT systems.
  • GCSE Grades A–C including Maths and English or equivalent.

  • General knowledge of accounting practices and concepts.
  • Use of IT packages including Microsoft Office Excel and Word.
  • Good numeracy skills, including experience of data manipulation.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
