Job summary

Newcastle College’s Commercial Services team is seeking a dedicated Catering Assistant to support high-quality food, drink and service across busy outlets. You will prepare, cook, and serve food and beverages while maintaining cleanliness and delivering excellent customer service.

The role requires a minimum Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate, Allergen Awareness, catering experience, good numeracy and literacy, and flexibility to work across outlets and service periods.

Job description

We are seeking a dedicated and customer-focused Catering Assistant to join our Commercial Services team. The successful candidate will play a key role in preparing, cooking and serving high-quality food and beverages while delivering exceptional customer service. You will be responsible for maintaining high standards of food quality, presentation, cleanliness and customer satisfaction across a range of busy catering outlets. Work collaboratively with Commercial Services Team Leaders and colleagues to ensure the efficient and effective delivery of catering services.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, cook and serve high-quality food and beverages in accordance with established recipes, procedures and service standards.
• Deliver excellent customer service and respond positively to customer enquiries and requests.
• Maintain the Commercial Services brand standards across all catering operations.
• Ensure designated work areas are kept clean, hygienic and well-organised at all times.
• Operate and maintain catering equipment safely and effectively.
• Use CPOS tills and cashless payment systems, ensuring all cash and electronic transactions are processed accurately and in accordance with financial procedures.
• Comply with all relevant food safety, health and safety, and hygiene legislation and procedures.
• Support colleagues in maintaining a safe, welcoming and professional environment for students, staff and visitors.

Requirements

• A minimum Level 2 Food Hygiene Certificate.
• Allergen Awareness Certificate.
• Experience in food preparation and cooking within a catering environment.
• Good knowledge of food safety, health and safety, and hygiene requirements.
• Strong customer service skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a team.
• Good numeracy and literacy skills.
• The ability to work flexibly across a range of catering outlets and service periods.

Commercial Services is a department within Newcastle College, operating a diverse range of hospitality and retail outlets across the organisation. Our facilities include large refectories, coffee shops, two Costa Coffee outlets, a convenience store and a student bar. We operate across the main campus on Scotswood Road as well as several satellite sites, including Riverside Dene at Cruddas Park, the Rail Academy in Gateshead and the Aviation Academy near Newcastle Airport.
