Job summary

BIMM University in Birmingham is seeking a Building and Maintenance Officer to support the daily operation of campus buildings, keep teaching spaces and shared areas well-maintained, and ensure safety and readiness for student activity.

The role covers coordinating opening/closing, arranging basic maintenance, liaising with contractors, keeping accurate records, and providing first-line IT and equipment support, with a 1:00 PM–9:30 PM shift pattern.

Qualifications

• Experience in building, maintenance or facilities environment.
• Strong organisational skills with ability to prioritise workloads.
• Clear verbal and written communication.
• Practical, solutions-focused approach with sound judgement.
• Ability to work with students, colleagues, contractors and service teams.
• Experience coordinating maintenance and contractor activity.
• Proficient with digital systems for maintenance records.
• Understanding of health and safety requirements.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Responsibilities

• Support day-to-day operation of campus buildings, ensuring spaces are prepared and maintained.
• Coordinate opening/closing of buildings per procedures and security.
• Take ownership of building presentation and resolve issues.
• Carry out routine inspections and reactive checks; take appropriate action.
• Undertake basic maintenance tasks and escalate to contractors when needed.
• Liaise with contractors to coordinate maintenance and monitor on-site activity.
• Maintain records of inspections, defects, maintenance and works.
• Support health and safety processes including inspections and audits.
• Provide first-line IT and equipment support; escalate complex matters.
• Record maintenance requests and operational information in systems.
• Act as first contact for building queries and coordinate support.
• Contribute to operational projects and support wider team.
