Becoming a Registered Building Inspector

We will consider individuals who are in the early stages of working towards RBI application and support you with the necessary requirements to become a Registered Building Inspector (Class 1, 2, 3) with the NHBC.

NHBC has a dedicated professional employee support team for the Building Safety Regulator framework and will provide funding and training required.

* Please note this opportunity requires a minimum of Class 2A-F RBI Registration.

What you’ll be doing

You’ll be an important part of a multi-disciplinary team of professional engineers and surveyors with responsibility for assessing Building Control and warranty applications on a wide variety of residential and mixed-use schemes.

You will be looking at all aspects of Building Control and assessing accordance with our service level agreements and operating procedures to ensure that all statutory requirements are met and meet the needs of our customers.

You’ll be based from home but can expect to be out frequently, visiting sites in your geographical area. From time to time, you’ll also need to visit our offices, including our head office in Milton Keynes.

Key elements of Building/Senior Surveyor role include:

  • Assess Building Control and warranty applications for residential developments and associated non-residential uses.
  • Negotiate with developers, builders, and their professional advisors, from initial design to completion, to ensure proposals are satisfactory in relation to regulation and our Standards.
  • Coordinate Building Control inspections, issue of Final Certificates, site and type approvals, and resolve problems related to Initial Notices/Final certification.
  • Support our Building Inspectors and Inspection Managers with expert advice, inspection of high-risk/complex building elements, and review of progress.

NHBC has a dedicated professional employee support team for the "Building Safety Regulator" framework. All training, guidance, development, and financial funding are provided.

What we are looking for:

  • In-depth knowledge and understanding of Building Regulations, building technology, and technical training.
  • Experience with structural defects, claims, engineering, NHBC Standards, and site inspection is a plus.
  • Extensive relevant building/construction experience, especially in housing and commercial sectors.
  • Understanding of building pathology.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and eager to develop your role.
  • Experience in Building Control.
  • A full driving license is required.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Working towards or holding chartered membership of a relevant professional institution (e.g., MCIOB, CABE).
  • Construction-related qualifications such as City and Guilds, HNC, HND, NVQ, or equivalent are preferred.
