Job summary

Durham County Council is seeking a Building Control Officer to help deliver a high-quality Building Regulation service within Spennymoor. You will manage a varied caseload and work with customers, developers and stakeholders under the guidance of the Principal Building Control Officer.

You will be career-graded, require a building-related qualification, and be BSR registered or working toward registration. The role includes site inspections, advisory work, and enforcement where needed.

Qualifications

• Demonstrate up-to-date knowledge of Building Regulations and related legislation.
• Be registered with Building Safety Regulator (BSR) or working towards registration.
• Have knowledge and experience in surveying/construction fields.
• Ability to communicate effectively with customers, stakeholders and colleagues.
• Maintain accurate records and documentation in line with statutory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Provide professional Building Control advice to customers and developers.
• Support pre-application advice, validation, plan examination and consultations.
• Undertake site inspections to ensure compliance with Building Regulations.
• Assist with dangerous structures, demolitions and enforcement duties.
• Provide accessibility guidance under the Equality Act.
• Liaise with internal services, external organisations and elected members.
• Contribute to service improvements and effective delivery of Building Control.
• Maintain accurate records in line with statutory requirements.
