Job summary

Choice Teachers are recruiting a BSL Teaching Assistant for a large secondary school in Greenwich. The role focuses on supporting students who require British Sign Language (BSL) to access lessons and participate fully in school life.

The ideal candidate holds a BSL Level 2 qualification and can evidence it. This full-time, long-term position offers a potential permanent placement and immediate start in an inclusive education setting.

Responsibilities

  • Support multiple students who use British Sign Language in mainstream lessons.

  • Assist students with accessing curriculum and class activities.
  • Deliver 1:1 and small-group support where needed.
  • Collaborate with teachers and other support staff.
  • Help create an inclusive learning environment and promote independence.

BSL Teaching Assistant - British Sign Language Level 2

Location: Greenwich, South East London
Job Type: Full-Time, Long-Term
Salary: £110 - £150 per day
Start Date: ASAP
Contract: Ongoing, with potential to become permanent

Choice Teachers are currently working with a large secondary school in Greenwich who are seeking an experienced BSL Teaching Assistant, British Sign Language Teaching Assistant, BSL Education Assistant or Communication Support Worker to join their team as soon as possible.

The successful candidate will work with multiple students who require British Sign Language support, helping them access lessons, communicate effectively and participate fully in school life.

This is a full-time, long-term and ongoing position, with the potential to become permanent for the right candidate.

British Sign Language (BSL) Level 2 or above is essential. Applicants must be able to provide evidence of their BSL qualification.

About the BSL Teaching Assistant Role
  • Support multiple students who use British Sign Language (BSL)
  • Provide communication support within mainstream classroom lessons
  • Use BSL to help students understand instructions, discussions and lesson content
  • Support students with accessing the curriculum and completing classroom activities
  • Work 1:1 and with small groups where required
  • Help promote students' independence, confidence and communication
  • Adapt your support depending on the individual needs of each student
  • Work closely with teachers and other support professionals
  • Support students' academic, social and personal development
  • Help create an inclusive learning environment where students can participate fully in school life
The Ideal Candidate Will:
  • Hold a minimum of British Sign Language (BSL) Level 2 - essential
  • Be able to provide proof of their BSL Level 2 qualification or above
  • Be confident communicating with students using British Sign Language
  • Have experience supporting deaf or hearing-impaired young people
  • Ideally have previous experience as a BSL Teaching Assistant, BSL Education Assistant, Communication Support Worker, Learning Support Assistant or similar
  • Be confident working with secondary-aged students
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Be patient, proactive and able to adapt to different students' needs
  • Be reliable, professional and committed to a long-term position
