BSL Specialist SEND Teaching Assistant – Special School (Full-Time, Long-Term)

Location: Barking and Dagenham
Salary: £475 – £525 per week (depending on experience & qualifications)
Start Date: ASAP

About the Role

Connex Education is working in partnership with a well-regarded special school in Barking and Dagenham to recruit a British Sign Language (BSL) Specialist SEND Teaching Assistant for a full-time, long-term role.

The school caters for pupils aged 4–16 with a wide range of complex learning needs, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), and hearing impairments. As a BSL-trained Teaching Assistant, you will support pupils who use BSL to communicate and may have additional sensory or learning needs.

This is a fantastic opportunity to join a dedicated, child-centred team focused on providing a nurturing and highly personalised education for every learner.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils who use British Sign Language as their primary method of communication.
  • Assist with the delivery of lessons and structured activities using BSL and visual communication strategies.
  • Support pupils with hearing impairments as well as other learning needs such as ASD or PMLD.
  • Contribute to the implementation of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and individual learning plans.
  • Promote an inclusive, safe, and encouraging learning environment.
  • Work closely with teachers, therapists, and the SENCO to deliver consistent, effective support.

Assignment Details

  • Full-time role, Monday to Friday
  • Working hours: 8:30 AM – 3:30 PM
  • Long-term assignment with the potential for ongoing or permanent work

Person Specification

  • BSL qualification (minimum Level 2) – essential
  • Experience supporting pupils with hearing impairments and complex SEND
  • Ability to adapt communication and support strategies to meet a wide range of needs
  • A calm, patient, and empathetic approach
  • A current DBS on the update service or willingness to apply for one through Connex
