Job description

Technical Investigation Engineer (Broadband / CPE)

Our client, a leading telecommunications organisation, is seeking an experienced Technical Investigation Engineer/Broadband CPE Test Engineer to join their Home Hub In-Life team. This is an exciting opportunity for a technically driven engineer with a background in broadband devices, Wi‑Fi technologies, embedded systems, or customer premises equipment (CPE) to play a critical role in diagnosing and resolving complex customer‑impacting issues.

This position sits at the intersection of Operations, Product Engineering, and Firmware Development, focusing on the investigation, replication, and root cause analysis of faults affecting home broadband routers, gateways, Wi‑Fi products, Digital Voice services, and associated connected devices.

The Role

As a Technical Investigation Engineer, you will take ownership of complex technical issues from initial escalation through to root cause identification and resolution. You will recreate real‑world customer issues within laboratory environments, analyse technical evidence, and work closely with development teams and suppliers to drive fixes through to deployment.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who enjoys problem‑solving, technical investigation, and getting to the root cause of challenging networking and connectivity issues.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead investigations into complex broadband, Wi‑Fi, Digital Voice, and Home Hub‑related issues.
  • Analyse logs, telemetry, packet captures, crash dumps, and customer diagnostic data.
  • Design and execute lab‑based test scenarios to reproduce and isolate real‑world customer faults.
  • Work closely with firmware engineers, chipset vendors, and third‑party suppliers to identify and resolve defects.
  • Produce detailed technical reports, defect documentation, and reproducible test cases.
  • Support major incidents and technical escalations with expert diagnostic input.
  • Develop automation and investigation tooling using Python and Linux.
  • Validate firmware fixes prior to deployment into the live customer environment.
  • Identify recurring trends and proactively drive improvements to customer experience and product stability.
Required Experience
  • Previous experience supporting, testing, validating, or investigating broadband CPE, routers, gateways, Home Hubs, or embedded networking devices.
  • Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
  • Good understanding of TCP/IP networking and broadband technologies.
  • Experience with Wi‑Fi technologies, RF fundamentals, and wireless troubleshooting.
  • Strong Linux knowledge.
  • Python scripting and automation experience.
  • Familiarity with packet capture and network analysis tools such as Wireshark.
  • Experience analysing system logs, crash dumps, and technical diagnostics.
  • Knowledge of FTTP, IPv4, IPv6, Digital Voice, TR-069 and TR-369.
  • Experience working with Jira, Git, GitLab, and automated test frameworks.
  • Ability to communicate technical findings clearly to engineers, suppliers, and stakeholders.
Desirable Experience
  • Broadband ISP or telecommunications experience.
  • Embedded systems or firmware testing knowledge.
  • Wi‑Fi chipset or driver troubleshooting experience.
  • Experience working with customer connectivity products and IoT devices.
What’s in it for You?
  • Opportunity to work on large‑scale broadband and customer connectivity platforms.
  • Exposure to cutting‑edge Home Hub and Wi‑Fi technologies.
  • Collaborative environment working alongside development teams, suppliers, and technical specialists.
  • The chance to make a direct impact on customer experience across millions of connected devices.
