Job summary

Matchtech Group is recruiting a Bridge Engineer or Senior Bridge Engineer to join a multidisciplinary highways team in Manchester. The role involves major road, rail and footbridge schemes across the UK and Ireland, from pre-planning to construction.

The successful candidate will deliver design packages, support inspections and rehabilitation, and apply Eurocodes, DMRB and UK standards while working with clients and contractors. Hybrid working with two to three days in the office.

Qualifications

• Degree-level qualification in Civil/Structural Engineering or related field.
• Experience in bridge and structures engineering within highways/transport.
• Understanding of Eurocodes, DMRB and UK standards.
• Chartered status or working towards professional chartership (CEng/MICE/MIStructE/MIEI).
• Ability to produce clear technical reports and design documentation.
• Strong communication and multidisciplinary team coordination skills.

Responsibilities

• Deliver bridge and structures design packages across a varied portfolio of transport infrastructure projects.
• Participate in inspections, assessments and rehabilitation schemes for existing bridges and structures.
• Design new reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel and steel composite bridges.
• Prepare technical reports, approvals and contract documents.
• Apply Eurocodes, DMRB and UK bridge design standards.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, clients, authorities, contractors and consultants.
• Manage technical tasks across multiple projects ensuring quality and delivery.
• Support or lead junior engineers and assist in project coordination and client relationships.

Job description

Our client is seeking a Bridge Engineer or Senior Bridge Engineer to join a multidisciplinary highways team in Manchester. This permanent role offers the opportunity to work on major road, rail and footbridge schemes across the UK and Ireland, supporting projects from pre-planning and preliminary design through to detailed design, assessment, rehabilitation and construction.

Key Responsibilities:

• Delivering bridge and structures design packages across a varied portfolio of transport infrastructure projects
• Contributing to inspections, assessments and rehabilitation schemes for existing bridges and structures
• Designing new reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel and steel composite bridges
• Preparing technical reports, approval-in-principle documentation, technical acceptance submissions and contract documents
• Applying Eurocodes, UK bridge design standards and the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB)
• Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, clients, local authorities, contractors and external consultants
• Managing technical tasks across multiple projects while maintaining quality, accuracy and delivery standards
• Supporting or leading junior engineers and contributing to project coordination, planning and client relationships

Job Requirements:

• Degree-level qualification in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline
• Relevant experience in bridge and structures engineering within the highways or transport infrastructure sector
• Strong understanding of bridge design, structural assessment and rehabilitation principles
• Knowledge of structural Eurocodes, DMRB and UK bridge design standards
• Experience using structural analysis and design software; knowledge of Midas Civil would be advantageous
• Ability to produce clear technical reports, design documentation and contract information
• Strong communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams
• Chartered status, or a commitment to working towards CEng, MICE, MIStructE, MIEI or an equivalent professional qualification

Additional Information:

• Location: Manchester
• Permanent position
• Hybrid working, with approximately two to three days per week in the office
• Standard working pattern of 37.5 hours per week
• Travel across the UK and Ireland may be required depending on project demands
• Projects include major highways and transport schemes such as the A66, M6 Lune Gorge, A417 and A9, alongside Ireland-based road and rail projects
