Job summary

GSL Education Colchester is seeking a Behaviour Mentor / Teaching Assistant to support pupils with behavioural, emotional and social difficulties in a school setting. You will deliver 1:1 and small-group support, focusing on emotional regulation and positive behaviour, while collaborating with teachers and SENCOs.

The role requires experience with SEN/SEMH, ADHD, ASC or complex needs, and demands a calm, patient and consistent approach. Competitive daily pay and opportunities for CPD are offered.

Qualifications

• Experience supporting children or young people with behavioural, emotional or additional needs.
• Experience with SEMH, SEN, ADHD, ASC or challenging behaviour.
• Confident using positive behaviour management and de-escalation strategies.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• A calm, patient and consistent approach, particularly when dealing with challenging situations.
• Ability to build positive relationships while maintaining clear and appropriate boundaries.
• Initiative, resilience and a willingness to work collaboratively with school staff.

Responsibilities

• Provide 1:1 and small-group support to students with behavioural, emotional and additional needs.
• Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils, acting as a consistent and positive role model.
• Support students with emotional regulation, self-management and positive behaviour choices.
• Implement agreed behaviour management and intervention strategies consistently.
• Use appropriate de-escalation and conflict-resolution techniques when supporting students in challenging situations.
• Identify potential triggers and help pupils develop strategies to manage their behaviour and emotions.
• Support pupils to re-engage with learning following incidents of dysregulation or challenging behaviour.
• Work closely with teachers, SENCOs and pastoral staff to provide consistent support.
• Encourage students to develop confidence, independence and positive relationships with staff and peers.
• Maintain a calm, structured and inclusive environment where students feel safe and supported.
