Job summary

GUARDIAN SELECTION LIMITED in York is seeking an Autism Learning Support Assistant to provide focused support for students with Autism Spectrum Condition in a specialist secondary setting. You will work with teachers and SEND staff to help students access the curriculum and participate in school life.

The role emphasizes building communication, emotional regulation, independence and confidence within a calm, predictable environment.

Qualifications

• Previous experience supporting children or young people with ASC or SEND is highly desirable.
• Familiarity with different ASC profiles and how autism affects communication, behaviour, sensory processing and learning.
• An Enhanced DBS registered on the Update Service (or willingness to apply for one).
• Strong safeguarding knowledge and commitment to child protection.

Responsibilities

• Provide one-to-one and small-group support to students with ASC, adapting approaches to individual profiles.
• Assist students in accessing lessons by adapting activities, communication methods and learning resources.
• Use consistent strategies to promote emotional regulation, positive behaviour and engagement.
• Build trusting relationships with students while encouraging independence and social development.
• Work with teachers and SEND staff to implement support plans and monitor progress.
• Maintain a calm, structured, inclusive learning environment meeting sensory and communication needs.
• Demonstrate resilience, patience and adaptability when supporting students with diverse needs.
