Job summary

The University of Manchester is seeking an Audio-Visual Engineer to join the Media Services AV Team, delivering high-quality AV systems and live events across the campus. You will plan, design, install, configure and maintain complex AV solutions while coordinating resources and ensuring value-for-money outcomes.

You will lead the technical planning of live events, produce professional AV documentation, and provide guidance to AV technicians.

Qualifications

• Degree or Level 6 qualification in media/AV or equivalent
• Experience with professional AV and IT technologies
• Experience leading live events
• Experience in higher education environment considered valuable

Responsibilities

• Lead on the technical planning and delivery of complex live events, advising clients and coordinating staff and equipment resources
• Consult with clients to capture requirements, design AV systems and deliver solutions within budgets
• Produce AV documentation, including system schematics, cable schedules, programming requirements and GUI configurations
• Install, configure, maintain, repair and commission AV systems across university spaces
• Procure AV equipment and related items in line with policies and value-for-money requirements
• Provide training and guidance to AV Support Technicians and contribute to staff development
• Research new technologies, platforms and solutions to support service improvement
• Help ensure safe working practices by assessing activities and introducing control measures

About the role

Media Services, within Campus Technology Services, provides professional media production, audio-visual support, live event technical delivery, graphic design and specialist print services across the University.
We are seeking a skilled and customer-focused Audio-Visual Engineer to join the Media Services Audio-Visual Team within Campus Technology Services, Directorate of IT Services at The University of Manchester.
This is an excellent opportunity to work as part of a busy and supportive team delivering high-quality audio-visual systems, facilities and live events across one of the UK's leading universities. You will take a lead role in the technical planning, design, installation, configuration, maintenance and delivery of complex AV systems and events, working with a broad range of technologies including professional audio, video, control systems, displays, signal routing, networked AV and live streaming.

What you will do

• Lead on the technical planning and delivery of complex live events, advising clients on suitable solutions and coordinating staff and equipment resources.
• Consult with internal and external clients to capture requirements, design AV systems and deliver solutions within identified budgets.
• Produce professional AV documentation, including system schematics, cable schedules, programming requirements and graphical user interface configurations.
• Install, configure, maintain, repair and commission audio-visual systems and facilities across University spaces.
• Procure AV equipment and related items in line with University policies, legislation and value-for-money requirements.
• Provide advice, training and guidance to Audio-Visual Support Technicians and contribute to the development of colleagues and partners.
• Research new technologies, platforms and solutions to support continuous service improvement.
• Help ensure safe working practices by assessing activities and introducing appropriate control measures.

About you

You will have a degree or RQF Level 6 equivalent professional qualification in media, audio-visual technology or a related discipline, or demonstrable professional skills and knowledge gained through relevant industry experience. You will be confident working with professional audio-visual and IT technologies, able to communicate clearly with a wide range of users and committed to delivering excellent customer service in a busy operational environment.
You will bring strong problem-solving, planning and workload management skills, along with the ability to influence, prioritise and work collaboratively. Experience of leading the technical aspects of live events, producing AV documentation, installing professional AV systems or working in a higher education environment would be particularly valuable.
