Job summary

The London Borough of Barking & Dagenham is seeking an Assistant to support a visually impaired colleague within the Customer Service team. Based at Barking Town Hall, you will assist with public enquiries across waste, education, housing, council tax, and electoral matters, providing practical day-to-day support and 1:1 assistance.

The role is full-time, on-site, funded via Access to Work, with strong long-term potential.

Assistant - Visual Impairment Support

Location: Barking Town Hall, London Borough of Barking & Dagenham

Hours: Monday to Friday, 09:00 - 16:30 (Full-time, on-site)

Pay: £15.00 per hour

Contract: Initially 3 months (with funding secured for up to 3 years)

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Assistant to assist a visually impaired member of staff within the Customer Service team at the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham.

Working closely with the employee, you will provide practical, day-to-day support to enable them to successfully carry out their role handling public enquiries relating to waste, education, housing, council tax, electoral enquiries, and more.

This position is funded via Access to Work, with strong long-term potential.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide 1:1 support to enable effective completion of daily tasks
  • Assist with navigation of websites, systems, and digital platforms
  • Support with saving documents and managing files
  • Carry out data protection checks to ensure service users are correctly identified

Systems & Training

Full training will be provided on internal systems, such as:

  • FreshDesk
  • OpenHousing
  • Payment and telephony systems

You will be expected to confidently support the use of:

  • Microsoft Teams
  • Word, Excel, Outlook
  • SharePoint & OneDrive

Working Arrangements

Based full-time on-site at Barking Town Hall

You will need to be flexible to align with the employee's schedule

Please note: when the employee is on annual leave, you will not be required to work, and you will be expected (where possible) to align your leave accordingly
