Job summary

Balfour Beatty Living Places is looking for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to support our commercial team in delivering infrastructure projects. The role is based in Wellingborough, Northampton with a requirement to attend the office at least one day per week and travel to other office locations as needed.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying (essential).
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills required.
  • Excellent communication and organisational abilities expected.
  • Proactive and enthusiastic approach to learning and development.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Full UK driving licence and ability to travel between offices.

Responsibilities

  • Support the commercial team in managing project costs and maximising value.
  • Measure, record and value completed works per company procedures.
  • Assist with cost reconciliation statements and commercial reporting.
  • Gather and analyse construction cost data.
  • Support procurement activities and prepare procurement documentation.
  • Assist with subcontractor measurement, valuations and agreements.
  • Support weekly and monthly works programmes.
  • Use company systems to manage project and commercial information.
  • Maintain accurate records and project documentation.
  • Collaborate with operational and commercial teams to deliver projects.

About The Role

Location: Your contractual base will be Wellingborough, Northampton, and you will be required to attend the office a minimum of one day per week, with travel to other office locations as required.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent Quantity Surveying graduate or someone in the final stages of their degree looking to develop their career within a leading infrastructure business. You'll work alongside experienced commercial professionals, gaining hands‑on experience across cost management, procurement, commercial administration and project delivery.

What you'll be doing
  • Supporting the commercial team in managing project costs and maximising value.
  • Measuring, recording and valuing completed works in accordance with company procedures.
  • Assisting with the preparation of cost reconciliation statements and commercial reporting.
  • Gathering and analysing construction cost data.
  • Supporting procurement activities, including the preparation and collation of procurement documentation.
  • Assisting with subcontractor measurement, valuations and agreements.
  • Supporting weekly and monthly works programmes.
  • Using company systems to manage project and commercial information.
  • Maintaining accurate records and project documentation.
  • Working closely with operational and commercial teams to support successful project delivery.
Who we're looking for
Essential
  • Degree in Quantity Surveying.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and organisational abilities.
  • A proactive and enthusiastic approach to learning and development.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Ability to travel to different offices.
Desirable
  • Previous construction, infrastructure or engineering industry experience.
  • Understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Quantity Surveyor.
  • Industry placement, internship or relevant work experience.
  • Working towards professional membership with RICS, CIOB or ICES.
  • Knowledge of commercial management and procurement processes.
