Cherry Professional Ltd is assisting a Nottingham-based client with an Assistant Accountant role focused on inventory/stock accounting and costing. The position supports a hybrid pattern (2 days in, 3 days remote) within a complex supply chain and warehousing environment.

Qualifications

• Experience in inventory/stock accounting within product, manufacturing or distribution environments.
• Strong analytical mindset with ability to interrogate data and identify root causes.
• Comfortable navigating ERP inventory modules and extracting data.
• Ability to own end-to-end processes with limited supervision.

Responsibilities

• Own the inventory accounting process including control, reporting and valuation movements.
• Investigate anomalies such as price shifts, write-offs and unusual stock movements with root-cause analysis.
• Support stock counts, review adjustments and assist write-off investigations.
• Understand POs, sales orders, inventory flows, in-transit stock and transaction impacts.
• Collaborate with Inventory Managers, Supply Chain, Warehouse and Finance to resolve discrepancies and improve controls.
• Support month/quarter/year-end close activities including accruals and balance sheet reconciliations.
• Assist with audit requests and SOX-style control requirements and contribute to process improvements.

Assistant Accountant

Nottingham, NG4 • Full Time - Hybrid (2 days in, 3 day wfh)

Client is a well-established, product-led organisation with a complex supply chain / assembly and warehousing environment and a newly-evolved inventory accounting function. This is a replacement hire with genuine scope for progression (but patience is required)

The opportunity

This is not a standard month-end MA role. The focus is inventory / stock / costing with a strong analytical bias - someone who enjoys interrogating data, spotting anomalies and owning a specialist process end-to-end, with plenty of stakeholder contact across operations.

Key responsibilities

• Own the inventory accounting process: inventory control, reporting, valuation movements and exception analysis
• Investigate anomalies (e.g., moving average price shifts, write-offs, unusual stock movements) and explain root causes
• Support physical stock counts, review stock adjustments and support write-off approval / investigation
• Build a solid operational understanding of POs, sales orders, inventory flows, in-transit stock and transaction impacts
• Partner with Inventory Managers, Supply Chain, Warehouse ops and Finance to resolve discrepancies and improve controls
• Support broader close activities (month/quarter/year end), including accruals, prepayments, balance sheet recs
• Support audit requests and control requirements (SOX-style environment mentioned)
• Contribute to systems/process improvement (automation/AI initiatives are encouraged)

What they're looking for (must-haves)

• Inventory / stock accounting exposure in a product / manufacturing / distribution environment (service-only backgrounds won't suit)
• Strong analytical mindset: comfortable challenging data, investigating variances, and working independently
• Confident navigating ERP systems (inventory modules/data extraction) - SAP desirable, but ERP systems such as Business Central / Dynamics / Oracle etc. all considered
• Someone who can own a process without heavy day-to-day hand-holding

Profile / level

Likely suits a part-qualified (or QBE with the right experience) finance professional with an appetite for gradual progression

They care more about mindset and capability than a specific qualification status

You’ll be excel capable and ideally SAP experienced with BI exposure also (can be flexible on this pending level of accounting experience relevant to the role)
