Job description

Overview

As an Assistant Accountant with Wincanton, you will play an important role within the Group Transport Finance Team. You will support the operational & financial running of the business, ensuring management accounts processes are followed. The role involves challenging current processes and championing continuous improvement across the team.

Our function combines the daily commercial & financial operations of transport with strategic controls to maximize value for our customers and the wider group.

The role is based at our Sainsbury's distribution centres in Kettering or Northampton. After initial training, the role will be hybrid, with 3 days in the office and 2 days remote.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Produce weekly flash accounts for multiple transport locations.
  2. Manage period-end processes for Wincanton and customers, including prepayment and accrual journals.
  3. Understand and explain variances to forecast, along with P&L analysis to identify underlying trends.
  4. Perform balance sheet reconciliations with supporting evidence for provisions or deferrals, including payroll reconciliations.
  5. Assist the Finance Manager in preparing annual budgets and forecasts, and drive process improvements.
  6. Communicate effectively with stakeholders regarding risks or opportunities in the P&L and resolve or escalate customer queries.
  7. Support the production of contractual customer reporting packs.

  1. Actively studying towards an accountancy qualification.
  2. Understanding of logistics business is desirable but not essential.
  3. Proactive, inquisitive, with a passion for challenging teams to improve performance.
  4. Flexible and responsive to internal and external requests.
  5. Excellent PC skills, especially Excel (pivot tables, formulas, etc.).
