Job summary

Equans invites applications for an Apprentice Highway Operative to train under supervision and work on London LED street lighting contracts from the Welwyn depot. You will learn highway electrical maintenance, assist installation crews and develop safety-compliant work habits while progressing toward a Level 2 Highway Electrical Systems apprenticeship.

The role offers full-time apprenticeship training with extensive learning opportunities, CSR days and access to staff networks, with the chance

Qualifications

  • GCSEs in Maths, English and Science at grade 4/C or above.
  • Willingness to work toward the NVQ Level 2 Highway Electrical Systems apprenticeship standard.
  • Willingness to obtain an ECS Apprentice Card.
  • Full UK driving licence or actively working toward one.
  • No prior industry experience required – full training will be provided.
  • Demonstrated interest in electrical work, engineering or practical hands-on tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist column installation crews on new installations and replacements.
  • Assist electricians with installation, repair and maintenance of street lighting assets.
  • Support fault-finding and carry out basic electrical checks under supervision.
  • Follow safety policies, risk assessments and method statements for highways and electrical systems.
  • Maintain tools, equipment and vehicles in a clean, safe, organized way.
  • Record work completed, materials used and asset information as required.
  • Interact professionally with the public, colleagues and contractors on site.

Installation & Maintenance SupportAssist Column installation crews on new installations and replacementsAssist qualified electricians in the installation, repair, and maintenance of street lighting assets, including columns, lanterns, cabling, and control equipment.Support fault-finding activities and carry out basic electrical checks under supervision.2. Safety ComplianceFollow all safety policies, risk assessments, and method statements when working on highways and electrical systems.Use PPE correctly and promptly report hazards, near misses, or unsafe conditions.3. Learning & DevelopmentSuccessfully complete all apprenticeship training, coursework, and on-the-job assessments within required timescales.Actively seek to increase knowledge of electrical principles, lighting technologies, and industry standards.4. Worksite Preparation & SupportPrepare tools, equipment, and materials needed for site tasks.Maintain clean, safe, and organised work areas and vehicles.5.
