Job summary

NHS Dumfries and Galloway are seeking compassionate SPOC Cancer Coordinators to provide a single point of contact for patients from referral onward, coordinating diagnostics, clinics, MDT meetings, treatment and follow-up.

You will support patients and families, maintain accurate records, work with cancer nurse specialists and booking teams, and contribute to developing the SPOC model across the cancer journey.

Qualifications

• Experience in health or social care.
• Experience in cancer care environment.
• SVQ 3 in Health/Social Care or Customer Engagement (or equivalent).
• Ability to undertake learning at SCQF level 8.
• Competent IT user (Microsoft Office, clinical systems).
• Willingness to undertake communication skills training.
• Buddying approach to new staff and ability to travel independently.

Responsibilities

• Act as a named point of contact for a defined caseload from referral onwards.
• Provide timely appointment coordination for diagnostics, clinics, MDT meetings, treatment and follow-up.
• Offer clear, accurate and sensitive information and support to patients, families and carers.
• Liaise closely with Cancer Nurse Specialists, booking teams, clinicians, GP practices and wider partner agencies.
• Maintain high-quality, accurate patient records and support Cancer Trackers with required pathway data.
• Assist patients to access support networks, services and resources across health, social care and the voluntary sector.
• Use established triage frameworks to assess needs, signpost appropriately, and elevate concerns.
• Contribute to audits, service evaluation, and the continuing development of the SPOC service.

Job description

We are seeking compassionate, motivated individuals to join our Oncology Department as Single Point of Contact (SPOC) Cancer Coordinators. This role sits at the heart of cancer patient support in NHS Dumfries & Galloway, providing a consistent, accessible and person-centred point of contact for people referred with an urgent suspicion of cancer or those already diagnosed. You will co-ordinate patient pathways, help ensure timely access to appointments, and work closely with clinical teams to support patients and families at all stages of their cancer journey. This is also a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of the SPOC model—an innovative and evolving approach to cancer care.

As a SPOC Cancer Coordinator, You Will

Essential Requirements

• Experience in health or social care, supporting people with complex needs
• Experience in a cancer care environment
• SVQ 3 in Health/Social Care or Customer Engagement (or equivalent)
• Ability to undertake learning at SCQF level 8
• Competent IT user (Microsoft Office, clinical systems)
• Willingness to undertake communication skills training
• Identify an existing member of staff as a Buddy*: When someone new joins the organisation or swaps to a new team, it can be daunting. Having someone identified as a “Buddy” can make a real difference to how they settle in. Evidence shows that members of staff who had a buddy assigned to them integrated and picked up the job quicker, and were more likely to stay in the role.
• Must be able to travel independently

You will join a supportive team within the Acute & Diagnostics Directorate at DGRI, working collaboratively across regional and local cancer services. The role is rewarding, emotionally meaningful, and central to improving patient experience across Dumfries & Galloway
