Job summary

York Teaching Hospital Facilities Management (LLP) is seeking a flexible Switchboard Operator to join the York Hospital team. The role supports a 24-hour switchboard service, with shifts including days, nights, weekends and bank holidays on a 4-week rota.

Expect to handle emergency calls, operate the switchboard, update electronic records on the ARC system, and manage related admin tasks. Training is provided and prior switchboard exposure is advantageous.

Qualifications

• English & Maths C or equivalent.
• Previous office/administrative experience in an NHS environment.
• Previous experience in a similar role (telephonist, receptionist).

Responsibilities

• Deal with emergency calls calmly over the bleep system.
• Operate switchboard and communication systems; liaise with callers.
• Handle enquiries professionally; provide help and advice to the public on the phone.
• Update and process information on the ARC system; chase updates with staff.
• Perform administrative duties and manage the Switchboard Email Group; log Trust taxi usage.
• Re-programme and issue replacement pagers/bleeps and replace batteries as faults arise.
