Job summary

Luma Education Recruitment is seeking a 1:1 Teaching Assistant to support a KS1 autism provision in Totnes. You will work with a small class of five pupils, using visuals and total-communication approaches to aid learning.

The role focuses on building trust, developing communication and daily living skills, with induction and ongoing coaching provided by the school and Luma consultant. Training opportunities are available.

Qualifications

• Experience with young children is essential.
• Calm, flexible and positive attitude to busy days.
• Good communicator and reliable team player.
• Experience of 1:1 support is beneficial; full induction and coaching provided.

Responsibilities

• Work 1:1 with individual pupils and small groups to help them take part in lessons and routines.
• Support early communication using visuals, symbols, objects of reference, signing and total-communication approaches.
• Help children develop play, social interaction, self-care and daily life skills.
• Identify and respond to sensory needs to keep pupils calm and ready to learn.
• Adapt activities to each child’s interests and development level.
• Follow individual plans and share observations with the class teacher.
• Collaborate with teachers, HLTA’s, support staff and visiting therapists.
• Celebrate progress with children and families.
