About the RoleAs Trade Compliance Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring that Harmattan AI's operations comply with all applicable export control laws, sanctions regulations, and trade requirements in France, the EU, and internationally (including U.S. ITAR/EAR where applicable). In the legal team, you will work closely with engineering, operations, and business teams to manage licensing, screening, documentation, and risk assessment processes.
ResponsibilitiesExport Control & Licensing- Identify and classify products and technologies under relevant export control regimes
- Coordinate and prepare export license applications with national authorities
- Maintain an up-to-date export control matrix and internal product classifications
Risk Management & Reporting- Proactively assess compliance risks related to new products, projects, or geographies
- Monitor regulatory developments and ensure ongoing alignment
- Interface with legal counsel, government agencies, and auditors when necessary
Internal Compliance Program- Build, implement, and continuously adapt Harmattan AI's internal trade compliance framework to match the company's evolving scale, operational complexity, and maturity - while staying responsive to shifts in geopolitical landscapes and regulatory environments
- Maintain accurate records and audit trails for export-related activity
- Train internal teams (engineering, ops, sales) on export regulations and best practices
Partner & Transaction Screening- Conduct restricted party screening for customers, suppliers, and partners (sanctions, embargoes, denied parties)
- Evaluate end-use/end-user risks in alignment with national and international controls
- Support due diligence in international transactions
Candidate Requirements- Educational Background: Master's degree in International Trade Law, Law, Political Science, or Engineering with compliance specialisation
- Professional Background: 3+ years experience in export control, trade compliance, or Strong knowledge of EU and U.S. export control frameworks
- Experience in preparing and managing license applications
- Familiarity with screening tools and compliance systems
- Meticulous attention to detail and very high level of integrity
- Excellent written & verbal communication in both French & English
- Ability to work cross-functionally with legal, technical, and operational teams
