The City of Fredericksburg is seeking an Aquatics Maintenance Technician to maintain City pools, splashpads, parks and facilities. You will operate and repair aquatic facility equipment, manage water chemistry, and maintain records with a 40-hour weekly schedule (seasonal).

The role requires safety compliance, independent work, and strong communication with staff and the public. Starting pay is $25/hour with paid time off, retirement, holidays and group health insurance.

The City of Fredericksburg is seeking applications for an Aquatics Maintenance Technician. Under administrative direction of the Recreation Superintendent, this position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties in the upkeep of City-owned pools, splashpads, parks and facilities. Essential job duties: pool maintenance operations, grounds maintenance work, maintain and repair Parks buildings and facilities, operate and maintain a variety of equipment, ensure cleanliness and sanitation standards are maintained within park facilities, and other duties as assigned. This position requires some computer-based work, including responding to emails, placing orders, and maintaining records. This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week, Sunday thru Thursday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., May 1 through September 30, and Monday through Friday, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., for the remainder of the year. Some holidays and special event work are required. Flexibility is required based on events and operational needs. • Performs all essential job functions of the Parks Crew Worker I.
• Operates, inspects, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs aquatic facility equipment and systems, including pumps, motors, chemical feeders, controllers, autofill systems, filtration and backwash systems, valves, piping, and related equipment.
• Maintains proper pool water chemistry, quality, and clarity in accordance with applicable state and local health standards; performs water testing, calculates and makes necessary chemical adjustments, and maintains accurate records.
• Follows manufacturer instructions, safety procedures, and applicable requirements for the handling, storage, use, and disposal of pool chemicals and other hazardous materials.
• Maintains adequate chemical and maintenance supplies; orders chemicals through the City's current chemical contract and coordinates routine or emergency service for chemical feeders and other specialized equipment as needed.
• Cleans and maintains pools and related equipment, including brushing and vacuuming pool surfaces, removing debris, cleaning skimmers and baskets, and performing routine filter and backwash procedures.
• Inspects, maintains, and repairs aquatic facility amenities and equipment, including decks, ladders, lifeguard stands, diving boards, waterslides, handrails, spray features, gates, fencing, restrooms, guard rooms, pump rooms, tables, and water fountains.
• Reports unsafe conditions, equipment failures, leaks, damage, and other operational concerns to Recreation Superintendent.
• Performs seasonal opening, pre-season preparation, winterization, shutdown, and preventative maintenance of aquatic facilities and equipment.
• Completes required inspection checklists, maintenance records, chemical logs, inventories, work orders, and other documentation.
• Performs general parks, grounds, buildings, and facility maintenance, including mowing, trimming, landscaping, irrigation, trail maintenance, plumbing, basic electrical work, painting, carpentry, welding, construction, and repairs.
• Plants, transplants, waters, fertilizes, and maintains trees, shrubs, flowers, turf, and athletic fields; applies pesticides and other landscape products in accordance with applicable requirements.
• Installs, maintains, repairs, and troubleshoots irrigation systems and performs plumbing and basic electrical repairs within the scope of training and applicable regulations.
• Assists with construction, renovation, and improvement projects, including fencing, shade structures, recreational amenities, and other specialized projects.
• Operates and performs routine maintenance on City vehicles, tractors, mowers, utility vehicles, trailers, hand tools, power tools, and other maintenance equipment.
• Maintains cleanliness, sanitation, appearance, and overall condition of parks, aquatic facilities, buildings, and recreational areas.
• Reports operational issues, safety concerns, equipment needs, and facility deficiencies to the Recreation Superintendent and assists with obtaining estimates and coordinating work with contractors and vendors.
• Communicates professionally and effectively with the public, tourists, City employees, contractors, vendors, and other agencies.
• Follows all applicable City policies, safety procedures, environmental requirements, and manufacturer recommendations.
• PARD is responsible for shelter operations during emergency situations. Must be able to assist with operations of this emergency shelter including working overnight shifts.
• The position requires the ability to listen and communicate effectively in English, including communication by telephone. Employees are required to respond to work-related emails, phone calls, and text messages within the designated 8-hour work period.
• Performs related work as assigned and/or required by Parks Maintenance Superintendent.

QualificationsEducation and Experience: High school diploma/ or equivalent. Must possess a valid driver's license and be able to drive City vehicles. Experience with pool pumps, motors, filtration systems, chemical feeders, controllers and chemicals preferred. Certified Pool Operator (CPO), Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO), or ability to obtain within 6 months of hire. Computer/Email/Microsoft Excel/Word software experience required. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of pool operation, water chemistry, filtration, circulation, chemical systems, and general aquatic facility maintenance.
• Knowledge of general parks, grounds, building, plumbing, electrical, irrigation, mechanical, and equipment maintenance.
• Skill in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, maintenance equipment, chemicals, and water-testing equipment.
• Ability to troubleshoot equipment and determine when specialized repair or contractor assistance is needed.
• Ability to read and understand equipment manuals, safety data sheets, labels, diagrams, and maintenance instructions.
• Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations related to water chemistry, measurements, and maintenance activities.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and complete required forms, logs, checklists, and work orders.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and respond appropriately to emergencies and changing operational needs.
• Ability to safely work around water, chemicals, electrical and mechanical equipment, vehicles, and power tools.
• Ability to perform physical labor and work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, contractors, vendors, and the public. PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Work is performed primarily outdoors and may require extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, swimming, and working in adverse weather conditions.
• The position requires sufficient strength, mobility, coordination, and endurance to perform manual labor; operate tools, equipment, swim, lift objects of 100 lbs. without assistance.
• Required to work with and handle a variety of cleaning and pool chemicals.
• This position may involve exposure to chemical fumes, airborne particles, and noise. Employees must be able to work safely in these conditions and follow all required safety procedures and wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
• This position requires the ability to listen and communicate effectively in English over the phone, email or text.
