The City of Granbury seeks a Meter Services Technician II to read and record meter data, perform minor repairs, and manage AMRS-based tasks. This role supports the Utility Billing Department and requires careful recording, customer interaction, and adherence to safety protocols.

Responsibilities include meter change-outs, defect inspections, and after-hours standby rotations with overtime compensation as per the pay schedule. A valid state license and clean driving record are required.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with AMRS or compatible systems; troubleshoot as needed.
  • Follow oral and written instructions clearly.
  • Communicate findings and/or violations to superiors and customers.
  • Willing to comply with City safety and personnel policies.
  • Able to obtain Class D license within one year.

Job Summary

Reads and records readings of electric and water meters, observing and documenting meter problems; performs minor meter repair and/or meter replacement as assigned; is proficient or can become proficient with the use of AMRS (Automated Meter Reading System) or comparable systems; performs other duties as assigned (meter related and other departmental tasks), in support of the Utility Billing Department.

Typical Duties
  • Reads water and electric meters and records volume used by residential and commercial consumers.
  • Walks and drives truck over established route and records accurate readings of meter dials.
  • Is proficient with the use of AMRS (Automated Meter Reading System) or comparable systems; is able to trouble-shoot, identify problems, and keep accurate records pertaining to the AMRS.
  • Inspects meters and connections for defects, damages, and unauthorized connections.
  • Reports malfunctions and unauthorized connections, and repairs and/or replaces meters with the guidance and approval of Water/Wastewater Superintendent, or designee.
  • Performs "connects" and "disconnects" of electric and water meters; meter change-outs; minor repair and maintenance of water and electric meters and water meter boxes; and related work as required.
  • Has schedule flexibility and proficiency to work after-hours (typically 5:00 PM to 10:00 PM "Standby" duties) on a rotating basis, if assigned. If assigned, coverage of these additional after-hours duties is compensated for by additional overtime pay and/or compensatory time, according to the approved pay schedule for these assignments.
  • Interacts with residential and commercial customers and staff, in tactfully handling problems or answering questions pertaining to meter reading; including conducting re-reads; communicating meter accessibility problems to property owner or responsible party; relaying recurrent "problem properties or issues" to appropriate superiors for their assistance with problem resolution.
  • Complies with all safety SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) including, but not limited to wearing issued safety equipment, following safety procedures, and refraining from handling situations which may pose an immediate danger.
  • Performs various other tasks as assigned including but not limited to: field observation of various Code violations, assistance with customer violation notification and other duties in support of the Utility Billing Department, as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required;
  • Possess a valid Class C Texas driver's license, with clean driving record;
  • Ability to read gauges and record figures accurately and efficiently;
  • Familiarity and proficiency in using and trouble-shooting with AMRS or a compatible Automated Meter Reading System;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to clearly communicate findings and/or violations to superiors and customers;
  • Must be willing and able to comply with all City of Granbury safety and personnel policy procedures;
  • Able to obtain Class "D" Distribution license within one (1) year as a condition of continued employment (required training will be provided).
Physical Conditions

Must be able to bend, climb and squat to perform duties. Must be able to lift, push, pull and carry objects weighing up to 100 pounds. Must have dexterity with fingers and hands to operate hand tools and small equipment. Must be able to see and distinguish colors and color tones; in order to effectively read multi-colored dials and indicators on meters. Must be able to smell odors and fumes. Hearing and vision must be satisfactory to the degree that duties may be performed effectively and safely. Maintain physical condition necessary for walking and standing for prolonged periods of time.

The City of Granbury offers a competitive salary depending on qualifications and experience. The city participates in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) at a 8% employee deposit rate with a city matching ratio of 2:1. The city pays 100% of the employee’s medical insurance and term life insurance. Full-time employees receive 40 hours of vacation at 6 months, then accrue each pay period based on the number of years employed up to 160 hours. 48 hours of Sick leave at 6 months, then accrue 3.70 hours each pay period. Full-time employees are eligible for 14 paid holidays. A full range of insurance benefits is also provided to full time employees. The city also provides a 9/80 work schedule where employees have every other Friday off.
