Job summary

Helsinki Shipyard in Helsinki seeks a Technical Specialist, Naval Ship Systems to lead the project technical authority for naval machinery, electrical and auxiliary systems from concept to execution. Responsibilities

  • Act as the project technical authority for naval ship machinery, auxiliary, and electrical systems from concept development and sales to the project execution phase.
  • Responsible for concept development, systems arrangement, system selection and integration, and lifecycle support of main ship systems (propulsion, electrical power, and auxiliary systems) in newbuilding and MRO projects.
  • During project execution, work with the larger project team and other design teams to ensure designs meet military requirements, naval standards and classification rules.
  • Participate in the development and improvement of company processes and naval know-how for ship systems.

Helsinki Shipyard is the global leader in icebreakers, ice-capable vessels, and other specialized ships. With more than 160 years of shipbuilding heritage in the heart of Finland's capital, the shipyard designs, builds, and sustains some of the world's most capable vessels for the toughest operating environments. Its expertise spans icebreakers, coast guard and naval vessels, cruise ships, yachts, and other specialized vessels for both government and commercial customers. Helsinki Shipyard has built more than 50 percent of the world's operational icebreakers.

Helsinki Shipyard is part of the Inocea Group, a privately owned international marine industrial group with shipyard operations in Canada (Davie Shipbuilding), the United States (Gulf Copper, Davie Defense), and Finland (Helsinki Shipyard, Sata Shipbuilding in Pori). Within the Group, Helsinki Shipyard serves as the center of excellence for ship design and Arctic technologies. The shipyard currently employs over 550 people and continues to grow rapidly, including a strong in-house engineering organization of nearly 200 ship design professionals.

The shipyard plays a central role in several international maritime security programs. It is currently building one of the Canadian Coast Guard's heavy polar icebreakers. In 2026, the group secured a contract with the United States Coast Guard for five Arctic Security Cutters.

We are looking for a Technical Specialist, Naval Ship Systems, to join our Naval Ship Design team.

Naval Ship Design team belongs to the Navy Segment, which is one of the four Segments in Davie Finland. Navy Segment is responsible for Naval and Governmental business development and projects.

In this role,

you will act as the project technical authority for naval ship machinery, auxiliary, and electrical systems from concept development and sales to the project execution phase.

You are responsible for the concept development, systems arrangement, system selection and integration, as well as lifecycle support of the main ship systems, including propulsion, electrical power, and auxiliary systems in newbuilding and MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Operations) projects.

During the project execution phase, you will be part of the larger project team and work closely with other design teams to ensure that the design meets military requirements, naval standards, and classification rules. You also participate in the development and improvement of company processes and the know-how of naval ship systems.

Qualification requirements

Education: Bachelors or Masters Degree in Engineering

To succeed in this role, you should have:

Previous experience in ship design and construction

  • Previous experience in large marine/naval projects
  • Broad knowledge of marine/naval industry and ship systems
  • Good understanding of Rules & Regulations in shipbuilding
  • Experience and interest in naval and defence projects and requirements
  • Good communication and presentation skills

Our office is centrally located at the Shipyard in Hietalahti, Helsinki. Our multinational team support hybrid work arrangements while also working together at the office on a weekly basis.

The position requires security clearance and may be limited to particular nationalities due to the end customer's requirements and legislation.
