Job description

Helsinki Shipyard is the global leader in icebreakers, ice-capable vessels, and other specialized ships. With more than 160 years of shipbuilding heritage in the heart of Finland's capital, the shipyard designs, builds, and sustains some of the world's most capable vessels for the toughest operating environments. Its expertise spans icebreakers, coast guard and naval vessels, cruise ships, yachts, and other specialized vessels for both government and commercial customers. Helsinki Shipyard has built more than 50 percent of the world's operational icebreakers.

Helsinki Shipyard is part of the Inocea Group, a privately owned international marine industrial group with shipyard operations in Canada (Davie Shipbuilding), the United States (Gulf Copper, Davie Defense), and Finland (Helsinki Shipyard, Sata Shipbuilding in Pori). Within the Group, Helsinki Shipyard serves as the centre of excellence for ship design and Arctic technologies. The shipyard currently employs over 550 people and continues to grow rapidly, including a strong in‑house engineering organisation of nearly 200 ship design professionals.

The shipyard plays a central role in several international maritime security programmes. It is currently building one of the Canadian Coast Guard's heavy polar icebreakers. In 2026, the group secured a contract with the United States Coast Guard for five Arctic Security Cutters.

We are looking for a Technical Specialist, Naval Regulation and Technology, to join our Naval Ship Design team as the key technical expert in naval ship rules, regulations, and technology. You support concept and basic design by guiding design teams and give input to project managers, sales, procurement, and cost estimation in naval and coast guard projects. You also lead design approvals, alternative solutions and exemption discussions with customers, classification societies, and naval flag authorities.

The role also maintains the company’s naval rules and standards database, develops shipyard standards for naval shipbuilding and ship life‑cycle support projects. You work also with stakeholders across the Group to develop best practices for naval ship design with special focus on Arctic technology and ice‑capability.

During the project execution phase, you will be part of the larger project team and work closely with design teams to ensure that the design meets military requirements, naval standards, and classification rules. You also participate in the development and improvement of company processes and the know‑how of naval ships.
