Job summary

Helsinki Shipyard is seeking a Ship Heating System Responsible Designer to lead heating and energy recovery work for complex ship projects. You will oversee concepts through basic design, coordinating with suppliers, other designers, and the production team to ensure practical, compliant solutions.

The ideal candidate has a degree in Naval Architecture or engineering, strong problem-solving skills, a few years of experience in ship machinery, and excellent English communication.

Responsibilities

• Act as the responsible systems designer for ship heating systems and energy recovery technologies in ship projects.
• Make technical, economical, regulatory, and quality-related design decisions throughout the project.
• Develop heating and energy recovery system solutions throughout the design process.
• Prepare system arrangements, piping diagrams, specifications, and technical documentation for the basic design phase.
• Develop system components and provide technical support for equipment procurement.
• Prepare test and commissioning programs and support the production team as a technical specialist.
• Work closely with suppliers, other designers, and production specialists to find practical design solutions and develop our ways of working.

We are Helsinki Shipyard - celebrating 160 years of shipbuilding excellence. Since 1865, we have been designing, building, and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. We proudly continue the legacy of Helsinki’s own Shipyard, right in the heart of Helsinki.

With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. To provide you with some perspective, we've built 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!

We are now beginning construction on a new heavy icebreaker for the Canadian government. The vessel will be constructed in Helsinki before being completed at Davie's shipyard in Quebec by 2030.

We are now looking for a Ship Heating System Responsible Designer for the 40-member Machinery Design Department.

In this role, you will:

• Act as the responsible systems designer for ship heating systems and energy recovery technologies in ship projects.
• Make technical, economical, regulatory, and quality-related design decisions throughout the project.
• Develop heating and energy recovery system solutions throughout the design process.
• Prepare system arrangements, piping diagrams, specifications, and technical documentation for the basic design phase.

• Work closely with suppliers, other designers, and production specialists to find practical design solutions and develop our ways of working.

To succeed in this role:

• You have a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Naval Architecture or another relevant field of Engineering.
• Strong problem-solving skills are a must.
• You have at least a few years of work experience
• Experience in the field of ship machinery is highly appreciated. Ideally, you have experience in a similar role at a shipyard.
• The ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment is essential.
• A good command of English, both written and spoken, is required.
