Helsinki Shipyard is offering internships across engineering and design teams in Helsinki. You will work alongside experienced engineers on real ship projects, assisting with design work, drawings, calculations, and supplier coordination.
The role provides hands-on experience in a multidisciplinary environment. Applicants should be students in a relevant technical field (Bachelor’s or Master’s) with strong English skills, and Finnish proficiency is required for the production department.
We are Helsinki Shipyard – celebrating 160 years of shipbuilding excellence. Since 1865, we have been designing, building, and commissioning tailor‑made, high‑class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. We proudly continue the legacy of Helsinki’s own Shipyard, right in the heart of Helsinki.
With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi‑purpose icebreakers. We've built over 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!
We are now beginning construction on a new heavy icebreaker for the Canadian government. The vessel will be constructed in Helsinki before being completed at Davie's shipyard in Quebec by 2030.
Each year, we offer multiple internships and thesis opportunities to support our design and production teams. If you are interested in an internship at Helsinki Shipyard, please leave us your application. Your application will be saved in our database, so we can easily find and match your skills and profile when we have open internship positions.
Usually, we have internship positions in the following departments:
In the design department, the working language is English, while in the production department, proficiency in Finnish is required.
As an intern, you will work alongside experienced engineers and designers and support ongoing ship projects. Your tasks may include assisting with design work, drawings, calculations, documentation, supplier coordination, and other project-related activities depending on your background, interests, and the department you join. You will gain hands‑on experience in a real shipbuilding environment and see how large, complex vessels are designed and built.
