Job summary

Natural Resources Institute Finland (Luke) invites applications for a Research Scientist, Doctoral Researcher position focused on soil carbon modeling within the DECODE project. The role involves developing Bayesian data assimilation around the Q-model, leveraging large European datasets and Luke’s supercomputing resources.

Based in Helsinki, the doctoral studies will be conducted through the University of Tampere, with collaboration across European institutions including the University of Oslo.

Qualifications

  • Higher university degree in a relevant field (e.g., applied mathematics, statistics, physics, computational science, environmental science, agriculture, ecology, microbiology).
  • Experience with Bayesian inference, MCMC methods, HPC or spatial modelling is an asset.
  • Good programming skills (R, Python) and ability to read, write, and debug code.
  • Strong English written and spoken skills; ability to work in a multidisciplinary international team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a Bayesian data assimilation framework around the Q-model using large datasets (e.g., Holisoils, LUCAS, ICP Forests) and scale results to Europe.
  • Integrate diverse data sources, perform model development, and use CSC’s supercomputing infrastructure.
  • Publish results in peer‑reviewed journals under supervision of the project PI.
