Job summary

University of Helsinki invites applications for a doctoral researcher position in the VODBIO project, developing 3D tree and forest models to support microwave VOD interpretation and biomass estimation. You will convert TLS data into quantitative structure models, integrate field measurements, and collaborate internationally across Finland, Kenya, and the Amazon.

The 36‑month contract is fully funded and includes fieldwork, publications, and career development within a vibrant remote sensing

Qualifications

• Strong programming skills in Python or R.
• Experience with point cloud processing and TLS/laser scanning.
• Background in geography, forest sciences, ecology, or geoinformatics.
• Capacity for independent scientific work and collaboration.

Responsibilities

• Develop workflows to convert TLS data into quantitative structure models.
• Describe tree architecture, biomass, and water-content in models.
• Integrate field measurements, TLS data, and satellite information.
• Participate in fieldwork and project meetings; contribute to publications.
