Job summary

The University of Helsinki invites applications for a doctoral researcher position within the VODBIO project, aiming to link 3D tree representations to microwave vegetation optical depth models. The role focuses on developing workflows to convert terrestrial laser scanning data into quantitative structure models for trees and forest stands.

Based at the Department of Geosciences and Geography, the researcher will work on field data collection, model development, and integration with satellite

Qualifications

  • Strong programming skills with Python or R
  • Experience with point cloud processing and TLS data
  • Familiarity with GIS and forest inventories
  • Interest in 3D vegetation modelling and remote sensing

Responsibilities

  • Develop workflows to convert TLS point clouds into quantitative structure models for trees and stands
  • Describe architecture, biomass and water-content properties in models
  • Process existing TLS datasets and collect new field data in contrasting ecosystems
  • Combine field measurements, TLS data and satellite information for VOD interpretation
  • Participate in fieldwork, data analysis, and scientific writing; collaborate with project partners
