Job summary

University of Helsinki invites applications for a doctoral researcher position in the VODBIO project. You will build 3D tree and forest representations from TLS data to support microwave VOD modelling, linking structure to vegetation water content and biomass.

The role spans fieldwork, advanced 3D modelling, and collaboration with international partners. Salary starts around 2700–2900 euros/month, with a three-year contract and a probation period.

Qualifications

  • Strong programming skills in Python or R are required.
  • Experience with point cloud processing, TLS, QSMs, GIS, or forest inventory is advantageous.

Responsibilities

  • Develop workflows to convert TLS point clouds into quantitative structure models (QSMs) of trees and stands.
  • Describe tree architecture, biomass distribution, and water-content properties in the models.
  • Process existing TLS datasets and collect new field data from contrasting ecosystems (Kenya, Amazon).
  • Collaborate with project partners in Finland and internationally; participate in fieldwork and meetings.
  • Contribute to PhD thesis on 3D tree/forest representations for microwave remote sensing.
