Job summary

Eaton is seeking a Lead Firmware Engineer in Vantaa, Finland to drive UPS firmware development, set technical direction, and coordinate globally within a hybrid R&D environment. You will mentor engineers, lead design reviews, and ensure robust release planning across product teams.

You will collaborate with hardware, software, and product groups to align roadmaps with business priorities, while maintaining high standards for safety and cybersecurity across all firmware activities.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • 8+ years of embedded firmware development experience.
  • Experience in control systems for power electronics.
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ for DSPs (fixed and floating point).
  • Experience with Real-Time Operating Systems (e.g., FreeRTOS).
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as CAN, SPI, Modbus, REST.
  • Proven ability to lead and mentor engineers.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams across geographically distributed sites.

Responsibilities

  • Lead global embedded firmware development for UPS platforms from design to release, working with cross-functional teams.
  • Own the firmware technical direction, architecture and subsystem requirements.
  • Drive global alignment and collaboration: define global development priorities and targets, and communicate status, risks, and issues.
  • Own the firmware roadmap and backlog, including sustaining backlog, intake, triage, and prioritization.
  • Plan and execute quarterly releases with Product Management, Engineering Management, and stakeholders.
  • Provide execution leadership through prioritization, cross-functional coordination, and issue escalation.
  • Own release governance and enforce quality through defect triage, risk management, and test plan approval.
  • Mentor engineers and lead design reviews; make timely technical decisions.
  • Own firmware development processes and cybersecurity activities supporting compliance.

We are looking for a Lead Firmware Engineer

Are you an experienced firmware engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, driving development priorities, and guiding other engineers toward success? Join Eaton's growing UPS R&D organization in Vantaa and help shape the future of critical power solutions used by customers globally.

As a Lead Firmware Engineer, you will play a key role in Eaton's UPS firmware development organization. You will be responsible for driving firmware development activities, making key technical decisions, coordinating priorities across stakeholders, and ensuring successful execution of both product development and sustaining activities.

You will work closely with firmware engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders across Eaton's international organization, helping align technical decisions with business priorities and future product roadmaps. In addition, you will play an important role in mentoring engineers, driving development practices, and supporting continuous improvement across the firmware organization.

Key responsibilities
  • Lead global embedded firmware development for UPS platforms from design → implementation → verification → release, working closely with cross-functional teams.
  • Own the firmware technical direction, architecture and subsystem requirements.
  • Drive global alignment and collaboration: define global development priorities and targets, both short- and long-term, and communicate status, risks, and issues to stakeholders.
  • Own the firmware roadmap and backlog, including maintaining the global sustaining backlog and ensuring effective intake, triage, and prioritization.
  • Plan and execute quarterly releases in partnership with Product Management, Engineering Management, and relevant stakeholders.
  • Provide execution leadership through day-to-day prioritization, cross-functional coordination, field issue escalation, and stakeholder management.
  • Own release governance and enforce quality through defect triage, risk management, technical gatekeeping, test plan approval, and release readiness activities.
  • Serve as a technical leader across the organization by leading design reviews, mentoring engineers, and making timely technical decisions.
  • Own firmware development processes and methodologies, including sustaining firmware practices and cybersecurity activities supporting compliance and product integrity.
What we expect from you
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • 8+ years of embedded firmware development experience.
Required skills
  • Proven experience in control systems for power electronics.
  • Strong proficiency in C/C++ programming, especially for digital signal processors (fixed and floating point).
  • Experience in Real-Time Operating Systems (e.g., FreeRTOS).
  • Solid understanding of software development processes and tools, including version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Expertise in state machine design and closed-loop control systems.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols such as CAN, SPI, Modbus, REST.
  • Proficient with lab equipment such as oscilloscopes and multimeters.
  • Comfortable working in high-voltage lab environments with strong safety awareness.
  • Ability to perform as a technical leader, mentoring others, making technical decisions and owning the technical direction.
  • Solid understanding of system engineering principles, including interface definition, system integration, and verification.
Preferred skills
  • Experience with MATLAB/Simulink or equivalent simulation tools.
  • Ability to read schematics and interpret electronic system behavior.
  • Ability to analyze and troubleshoot analog/digital circuitry; hands-on experience with PCB bring-up.
  • Skilled in interpreting datasheets, including timing and interface specifications.
  • Experience creating firmware architecture documentation using UML or similar techniques.
  • Knowledge of unit testing, test-driven development, and Hardware-In-the-Loop (HIL) testing.
  • Experience with embedded Linux.
  • Experience with PLD/FPGA programming using hardware description languages (e.g., VHDL, Verilog).
  • Exposure to Agile development methodologies, such as Scrum.
  • Experience with Assembly language programming.
  • Understanding of electrical safety standards and best practices.
