Job description

We are Helsinki Shipyard – celebrating 160 years of shipbuilding excellence. Since 1865, we have been designing, building, and commissioning tailor-made, high-class passenger vessels and icebreakers for extreme conditions. We proudly continue the legacy of Helsinki’s own Shipyard, right in the heart of Helsinki.

With us, you get to design and build the ships under one roof from start to finish, in close collaboration with our customers. Our specialty lies in vessels that operate on the polar seas, but we can build everything from smaller yachts to complex multi-purpose icebreakers. We've built over 50% of the world's icebreakers - without us it would be hard to navigate in the icy seas!

We are now beginning construction on a new heavy icebreaker for the Canadian government. The vessel will be constructed in Helsinki before being completed at Davie's shipyard in Quebec by 2030.

We are currently looking for a Fire Extinguishing System Designer to join our diverse Design team of 26 professionals. The HVAC Design Department is responsible for designing systems and selecting suppliers for all passenger and crew comfort systems, safety-related piping systems, and several other essential ship functions.

In this role, you will be responsible for the design and procurement of fire extinguishing systems on board vessels, ensuring compliance with applicable rules, regulations, and technical specifications, and meeting client expectations.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Preparing technical purchase specifications for key systems and system components
  • Evaluating and rating suppliers’ technical offers
  • Participating in the preparation of technical specifications prior to ship contract signing
  • Supporting the sales team with technical expertise related to fire extinguishing systems

As the system-responsible engineer, you will:

  • Develop and maintain system-related technical documentation required during the basic design phase
  • Define and maintain system component information in the internal database
  • Ensure system approvals by authorities and clients
  • Ensure timely availability of system components for onboard installation in cooperation with procurement and planning departments
  • Act as the main point of contact for system and component suppliers
  • Represent the shipyard in Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) for procured equipment
  • Collect and prepare the ship's delivery documentation
  • Support detail design teams and follow up on design changes
  • Provide technical support to production and commissioning teams
  • Ensure effective distribution of system-related information to relevant stakeholders
  • Collaborate with other disciplines to ensure proper system integration and consider project constraints
  • Develop and maintain the shipyard’s standard solutions

To succeed in this role:

  • You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a relevant field of Engineering.
  • You have already gained experience in fire extinguishing systems (eg. Automatic sprinkler systems, water mist systems, foam fire suppression systems, clean agent fire suppression systems, and carbon dioxide (CO₂) fire suppression systems.)
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment are necessary.
  • A good command of the English language (both written and spoken) is required.

“The ship project takes from two to three years, and you can literally see the completion of the ship from plans to the finished ship ready for her maiden voyage outside one’s own window. It’s always a moving moment when a ship leaves for her home port”,

Mohamed Elameen, Ship Theory Engineer.
