Job description

Finnair is a diverse community of professionals who work ambitiously, with a big heart and strong commitment. A strong safety culture is our priority and at the core of our everyday work - something we never take for granted. We are also committed to doing our share in solving the climate challenge by determinedly following our science-based pathway to decarbonize our operations.

We find meaning in our purpose: With our heart in Finland, we make every journey better, today and tomorrow. Our values - Always Safe, Customer at Heart and Stronger Together - guide us in everything we do.

Intelligent Operations is a new organization within Finnair Digital, focused on accelerating the digital transformation of airline operations. We bring together expertise in technology, data, architecture, integrations, and operational development to build reliable digital capabilities that support operational workflows and decision-making across the airline.

We are now looking for a Data Scientist to join our Intelligent Operations team at Finnair.

In this role, you will develop predictive models and optimization solutions that support operational decision-making across Finnair. You will apply advanced analytical methods, including time-series analysis, multivariate modelling, pattern recognition and anomaly detection, to complex operational data. Your work will help identify irregularities, recognize early indicators of potential technical issues, and support proactive maintenance and operational decision-making.

The role combines strong data science expertise with an interest in software development. We aim to build reliable, production-ready solutions by applying modern software engineering practices, including code quality, testing, maintainability, deployment, monitoring, and continuous improvement.

You will work closely with operational stakeholders, Business Analysts, Data Engineers, Software Developers, architects and other Digital teams to understand business needs and develop reliable analytical and AI-driven solutions for an operationally critical environment.

Main responsibilities
  • Work with operational stakeholders and Digital teams to understand operational challenges and translate them into predictive modelling and optimization solutions
  • Design, develop, validate, and deploy predictive and optimization models that support operational planning, maintenance, and decision-making
  • Apply statistical and machine learning techniques, including feature engineering, pattern recognition and anomaly detection, to complex operational data to develop reliable predictions
  • Build scalable, maintainable and production-ready data science solutions, applying modern software engineering practices, including clean, tested and reusable code and test-driven development where appropriate
  • Contribute to MLOps practices, including model deployment, monitoring, observability and continuous improvement of data science and optimization solutions
  • Ensure high standards for data quality, model validation, governance, and responsible use of AI
  • Communicate findings, model outcomes, risks and recommendations to technical and business stakeholders, and contribute to improving data science and engineering practices within Intelligent Operations.
Our expectations
  • Master's degree or higher in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Engineering, Operations Research or another relevant quantitative field.
  • Minimum 3-5 years of experience in Data Science, Machine Learning, Operations Research or a similar analytical role
  • Strong foundation in mathematics, statistics and machine learning, with practical experience in predictive modelling and familiarity with techniques such as multivariate time-series analysis, feature engineering, pattern recognition, and anomaly detection
  • Strong Python programming skills and an interest in software engineering, including testing, version control, CI/CD and MLOps practices
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to work with complex data and communicate findings to technical and business stakeholders
  • Experience with AWS, predictive maintenance, sensor data, or aviation is considered an advantage
  • Fluency in English is required; Finnish language skills are an advantage.
