At IREC – Institut de Recerca Energía de Catalunya, we are looking for an IT Systems and Projects Engineer to join our Information Technology, Communications and Cybersecurity Department, based in Barcelona, Sant Adrià de Besòs.

You will join a team of four professionals, where you will have the opportunity to develop your career across the fields of information technology, communications and cybersecurity.

Key responsibilities

IT team support

• As a Level 3 technician, you will be required to occasionally provide technical support to N2 staff for tickets they are unable to resolve.
• Transfer knowledge through documented procedures, technical sessions and hands-on support.

Server, storage and corporate infrastructure

• Design, implement, administer and continuously improve server, storage and corporate IT service infrastructure.
• Administer Windows Server and Linux systems.
• Manage directory and identity services, DNS, DHCP, RADIUS, certificates, permissions and policies.
• Monitor system performance, capacity, availability and lifecycle.
• Diagnose and resolve Level 3 technical incidents.

Virtualisation and infrastructure

• Administer virtualisation platforms including VMware vSphere, ESXi and Proxmox.
• Design and carry out deployments, expansions, migrations and upgrades, including migrations from VMware to Proxmox.
• Manage clusters, storage, virtual networks, snapshots and high-availability environments.
• Analyse capacity, performance, dependencies and single points of failure.
• Prepare testing and rollback plans for infrastructure changes, as well as document Disaster Recovery Plans (DRP).

Backup and business continuity

• Design improvements and administer Veeam backup and recovery platforms.
• Monitor backup operations and analyse errors or assets without adequate backup coverage.
• Perform and document periodic restoration tests.
• Participate in business continuity and disaster recovery planning.

Microsoft 365, Azure and Power Platform

• Administer Microsoft 365, Azure and Power Platform environments.
• Design, implement and manage security and compliance policies.
• Participate in the design and operation of hybrid services between on-premises infrastructure and Microsoft Azure.
• Design, implement and manage Microsoft 365 recovery plans.
• Design and implement governance models for Power Platform, Copilot and Power Automate.
• Design, implement and administer Azure services, including servers, resource groups and gateways.

Cybersecurity

• Integrate security principles into infrastructure design and operations.
• Implement hardening, patching, segmentation and least-privilege measures.
• Collaborate in the operation of EDR/XDR solutions, endpoint protection and monitoring tools.
• Participate in the investigation and resolution of cybersecurity incidents.
• Produce technical evidence to support ENS, ISO 27001 and audit requirements.

Project management

• Gather technical requirements and translate them into solution proposals.
• Compare alternatives based on cost, risk, security, maintainability and compatibility.
• Deliver improvement projects across different areas of the department.

Education and experience requirements

• Advanced Vocational Training (CFGS) in Networked Computer Systems Administration, a Bachelor's Degree in Computer Engineering, or a similar qualification.
• At least 10 years of professional experience, progressing from providing technical user support to working as a Systems Administrator and Systems Engineer.
• Experience implementing VMware and Proxmox virtualisation environments, including VM provisioning, snapshots, management of node resources, performance monitoring and troubleshooting of virtualisation platforms.
• Experience with Windows Server 2022–2025 and Linux, with the technical expertise required to deliver projects involving domain controllers, Active Directory, DHCP, DNS and Group Policy Objects (GPOs), including hybrid architectures with Microsoft Entra ID.
• Experience managing backup and replication solutions using Veeam and Veeam Backup for Microsoft 365, including configuring and monitoring encrypted and immutable backup policies, performing periodic verification audits to ensure data integrity, and carrying out full and partial restores.
• Experience implementing and administering Dell storage systems, including the creation and management of datastores, volumes and LUNs, RAID configuration, storage replication, and hardware and software maintenance.
• Experience administering Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Teams, OneDrive, SharePoint and Intune, including implementing security policies, deploying applications across the IT environment, and managing user permissions according to the principle of least privilege.
• Experience implementing IT infrastructure projects involving both hardware and software.
• Experience standardising procedures and producing the technical documentation associated with projects.
• Experience providing technical support and guidance to Help Desk and lower support levels.
• Experience working in alignment with ISO 27001 and the Spanish National Security Framework (ENS), at least at Medium level.
• Conversational and written proficiency in Catalan and Spanish.
• Knowledge of Microsoft Azure, including the design and implementation of projects involving Microsoft Intune.
• Knowledge of Power Automate, Power BI and Copilot Studio (Power Platform).
• Knowledge of cPanel and WordPress administration.
• Experience managing security policies, creating firewall rules and VLANs, updating and administering Fortinet firewalls, switches and access points, as well as managing these environments through FortiManager.
• Knowledge of Data Loss Prevention (DLP) management in Microsoft 365.
• Conversational and written proficiency in English.
