Boomerang is supporting a leading international pharmaceutical and biotechnology company in the search for a European Patent Attorney to join its Legal & Intellectual Property team. The role focuses on industrial and digital technologies, including medical devices, software and AI, with high autonomy and collaboration across a European IP team.

• Fully or partly qualified European Patent Attorney (EQE).
• Technical background in industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, electronics, telecoms, computer science, software engineering or AI.
• Approximately 3–10 years of relevant professional experience with strong drafting/prosecution skills.
• Experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications and conducting patentability searches and FTO analyses.
• Experience in medical devices, digital health, software/AI or related industrial technologies preferred.
• Ability to work autonomously and own an area of expertise within a broader IP team.
• Excellent English; additional languages valued.

We are supporting a leading international pharmaceutical and biotechnology company in the search for a European Patent Attorney to join its Legal & Intellectual Property team.

The company is strengthening its patent capabilities in industrial and digital technologies, driven by an increasing number of projects involving medical devices, engineering solutions, software, artificial intelligence and computer-implemented inventions.

The person joining the team will become a key IP specialist for the industrial and digital area, taking ownership of these matters with a high degree of autonomy while working closely with other European Patent Attorneys and IP professionals.

The role involves direct interaction with R&D, technical, scientific and business teams, providing IP advice throughout the innovation process and supporting the protection and development of new technologies.

Main responsibilities

• Acting as an IP reference point for industrial and digital projects, particularly in medical devices, engineering, software, AI and computer-implemented inventions.
• Working directly with researchers, technical teams and business stakeholders to identify potentially patentable innovations and define appropriate protection strategies.
• Assessing new R&D developments and digital solutions from an IP perspective.
• Drafting and prosecuting European and international patent applications.
• Conducting and reviewing patentability, state-of-the-art, patent landscape and Freedom to Operate (FTO) analyses.
• Managing patent portfolios and monitoring relevant third-party IP rights.
• Providing opinions on patent validity, infringement and potential IP risks.
• Participating in opposition and appeal proceedings before the EPO when required.
• Supporting confidentiality and IP protection measures throughout the development process.
• Providing IP support to business development and other internal stakeholders.
• Collaborating closely with other European Patent Attorneys and IP specialists within the team.

What we are looking for

• Fully or Partially Qualified European Patent Attorney (EQE).
• Technical background in Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics, Telecommunications, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence or a related technical discipline.
• Approximately 3–10 years of relevant professional experience. Different levels of seniority can be considered depending on the candidate’s technical background and patent expertise.
• Solid experience in drafting and prosecuting patent applications, as well as conducting patentability searches and FTO analyses.
• Experience in medical devices, digital health, software, AI, computer-implemented inventions or other industrial technologies will be particularly valued.
• Previous experience or exposure to the pharmaceutical or biotechnology sector will be considered a strong asset, although candidates with a solid patent background in technology, engineering or other industrial environments will also be considered.
• Ability to work autonomously and take ownership of an area of expertise within a broader IP team.
• Strong analytical and drafting skills, with the ability to understand complex technologies and translate them into effective IP strategies.
• Ability to interact effectively with researchers, engineers, technical experts and business stakeholders.
• Excellent command of English. Additional languages will be valued.
• Strong organizational and planning skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.
