Macadam in Barcelona is seeking an experienced Backend Engineering Manager to own the technical quality of our backend and lead a 5-engineer team. You will report to the Director of Engineering and help scale systems used by millions.

You should bring 6+ years in backend development, deep TypeScript/NestJS expertise, and strong PostgreSQL, Redis, and GCP experience. You’ll mentor engineers, drive architecture, and maintain a pragmatic, data-driven approach. English fluent.

• Proactive communicator: you surface risks early without being asked.
• Fluent in English.

THE ROLE

As Backend Engineering Manager at Macadam, you'll own two things at once: the technical quality of our backend, and the day-to-day leadership of a team of 5 engineers. You'll report directly to the Director of Engineering. This role is based in Barcelona. We're looking for candidates who are already living in the city or ready to relocate.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

• Build a robust, scalable architecture and a team that operates autonomously.

What you’ll be owning:

• Engineering Excellence: Beyond just shipping, you’ll actively improve our backend processes, track performance, and sharpen our delivery lifecycle.
• Collaborative Impact: You’ll work closely with our QA and Mobile teams to smooth out the friction in our day-to-day operations.
• The AI Edge: We don't just use AI tools; we lean on them. I’m looking for someone who trusts AI to multiply their output and who will push our team to grow and iterate faster because of it.
• The Reality: You’ll be leading a team of 5 backend engineers in a NestJS/TS/Postgres/GCP environment.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

• 6+ years of experience in backend development, with production systems at scale.
• Deep expertise in TypeScript and NestJS, you're the person others come to with hard questions.
• Strong PostgreSQL skills: indexing, query optimization, schema design at scale.
• Hands‑on experience with Redis and Google Cloud Platform.
• Experience with Prisma ORM or equivalent is a strong plus.
• You've led or mentored engineers before, you know how to give direct feedback and grow people.
• You scope before you build and push back when complexity isn't justified.
• Proactive communicator: you surface risks early without being asked.
• Fluent in English.

• Backend: Node.js with TypeScript, NestJS framework, Prisma ORM.
• Database: PostgreSQL, Redis (caching).
• Infrastructure: Google Cloud Platform (Cloud Run, Pub/Sub, Cloud Storage).
• Mobile: React Native with TypeScript.
• Analytics: BigQuery, Mixpanel, Metabase.
• Practices: REST APIs, CI/CD pipelines, code reviews, agile sprints.
