Job summary

BMW Group Car IT in Ulm seeks an experienced embedded software engineer to stabilize Linux and Android platforms for BMW vehicles. You will debug across kernel, frameworks, HALs, and drivers, analyze crashes and performance, and develop tools for monitoring and validation.

You should have 5+ years in Linux/Android embedded systems, a strong C/C++ background, and excellent English skills, with German a plus. Relocation and hybrid work options are offered in Ulm.

Qualifications

• Bachelor-level degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, or equivalent.
• 5+ years in Linux and Android embedded systems.
• Strong knowledge of Linux kernel, Android framework, system services, boot process and resource management.
• Proficient in debugging, tracing, profiling and performance analysis tools.
• Experience in automotive embedded software development and QA.
• Business English; German is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Ensure system stability for Linux and Android-based embedded platforms across software deliveries.
• Analyze and resolve performance, boot, memory, CPU, and service issues.
• Debug cross-layer issues across kernel, frameworks, HALs, middleware, drivers and applications.
• Perform root-cause analysis using tracing, profiling and debugging tools.
• Examine crash dumps, kernel panics, ANRs, watchdogs and memory leaks to improve robustness.
• Develop proofs of concept, validation solutions and automation tools for analysis and monitoring.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to improve platform reliability and software quality.

• You ensure system stability for Linux and Android-based embedded platforms across software deliveries.
• You analyse and resolve complex issues related to performance, boot behavior, memory management, CPU load, and system services.
• Furthermore, you debug cross-layer issues across kernel, frameworks, HALs, middleware, drivers, and applications.
• In addition, you perform root cause analysis using tracing, profiling, and debugging tools.
• You examine crash dumps, kernel panics, ANRs, watchdog resets, and memory leaks to improve system robustness.
• Moreover, you develop proof of concepts, validation solutions, and automation tools for analysis and monitoring.
• You collaborate with cross-functional teams and drive continuous improvements in platform reliability and software quality.

What should you bring along?

• University degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a comparable field.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in Linux and Android embedded systems.
• Extensive experience with Linux kernel, Android framework, system services, boot process, and resource management.
• Advanced knowledge of debugging, tracing, profiling, and performance analysis tools such as GDB, Perf, Ftrace, Perfetto, ADB, and Logcat.
• Experience in analysing crashes, memory leaks, deadlocks, race conditions, kernel panics, ANRs, and performance bottlenecks.
• Professional experience in embedded software development and quality assurance in the automotive industry.
• Very good business English skills; German language skills are an advantage.
