Job summary

Schmitt Engineering is seeking a Senior Python Backend Engineer (m/f/d) to join AI Service Operations. You will take technical responsibility for the stable, reliable operation of AI-powered applications in production, spanning Python backends, REST APIs, databases, and AI integrations.

You will improve monitoring, logging, CI/CD, tests, and fault tolerance, and collaborate with backend, frontend, cloud, and platform teams.

Qualifications

• Proven Python backend development and operation of productive applications.
• Experience with REST APIs, databases, distributed systems, and complex architectures.
• Experience debugging, root-cause analysis, and safe production deployments.
• Knowledge of Docker, CI/CD, monitoring/observability; AWS and IaC a plus.
• Understanding of LLM-based apps and API integration; familiarity with RAG/embeddings desirable.
• Basic knowledge of React and TypeScript; experience with SAP or Snowflake a plus.

Responsibilities

• Take technical responsibility for the stable and reliable operation of AI-supported applications in production environments.
• Analyze and resolve complex production disruptions across Python backends, REST APIs, databases, frontends, and AI integrations.
• Identify root causes using logs, metrics, traces, and monitoring systems, and derive sustainable solutions.
• Develop existing Python code and implement secure bug fixes, hotfixes, and technical improvements.
• Optimize monitoring, logging, alerting, error handling, performance, and fault tolerance of applications.
• Create automated tests and ensure code quality through CI/CD processes.
• Support the operation of cloud-based applications and collaborate with backend, frontend, cloud, and platform teams.
• Document technical solutions and support knowledge transfer, commissioning, and hypercare.

Your Responsibilities

• Take technical responsibility for the stable and reliable operation of AI-supported applications in the production environment
• Analyze and resolve complex production disruptions across Python backends, REST APIs, databases, frontends, and AI integrations
• Identify root causes using logs, metrics, traces, and monitoring systems, and derive sustainable solutions
• Further develop existing Python code and implement secure bug fixes, hotfixes, and technical improvements
• Optimize monitoring, logging, alerting, error handling, performance, and fault tolerance of applications
• Create automated tests and ensure the quality of code changes through established code review and CI/CD processes
• Support the operation of cloud-based applications, maintain technical dependencies, and collaborate with backend, frontend, cloud, and platform teams
• Document technical solutions, create troubleshooting guides, and support knowledge transfer, commissioning, and hypercare

Your Profile

• Completed studies, further training as a technician, or completed training with proven relevant professional experience in Python backend development and the operation of productive applications
• Solid knowledge of Python and experience with REST APIs, databases, distributed systems, and complex application architectures
• Experience in debugging, root cause analysis, and safely deploying bug fixes in production environments
• Knowledge of Docker, CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, and observability; experience with AWS and Infrastructure as Code is a plus
• Understanding of LLM-based applications and their API integration; knowledge of RAG, embeddings, vector databases, or AI agents is desirable
• Basic knowledge of React and TypeScript, as well as experience with enterprise integrations, such as SAP or Snowflake, is a plus
• Analytical, structured, and independent working style, as well as taking technical responsibility and maintaining an overview in critical situations
• Very good German and business fluent English skills, both written and spoken

Note: We require good German language skills at least at B2 level for this position, as German is our corporate language.
