Job summary

THRYVE is seeking a senior project leader based in Munich to drive utility-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across Germany from development through grid connection, construction and commissioning.

You will guide technical and commercial decisions, manage key partners and align project design with market opportunities like FCR and arbitrage, while coordinating multidisciplinary teams to keep projects moving.

Qualifications

• Five+ years of project management experience in BESS, renewables or energy infrastructure.
• Proven track record delivering utility-scale BESS projects through construction and commissioning.
• Strong understanding of German grid-connection processes and electricity market.
• Experience leading EPCs, suppliers and complex commercial negotiations.
• Sound technical and commercial judgement with ability to assess trade-offs.

Responsibilities

• Own a portfolio of BESS projects across full lifecycle including budgets, schedules, quality and risk.
• Lead grid connection, drive DSOs/TSOs negotiations and coordinate milestones.
• Oversee system sizing, technology selection, PCS specification and MV/HV integration.
• Manage tenders, evaluate proposals and negotiate terms with EPCs and suppliers.
• Coordinate with authorities, landowners and development teams to secure approvals.
• Lead contractor coordination through construction, commissioning and handover to operations.
• Collaborate with trading/optimisation partners to align design with FCR, aFRR and arbitrage.
• Provide senior oversight and report portfolio progress with escalation plans.
• Raise delivery standards by sharing best practices.

Reporting to: Head of BESS / Head of Projects

Lead the delivery of utility-scale battery storage

Take a leading role in turning battery storage opportunities into operating assets. Based in Munich, you’ll own a portfolio of utility-scale BESS projects across Germany, guiding standalone and co-located storage projects from development through grid connection, construction and commissioning.

This is a senior role with real influence over project direction. You’ll lead technical and commercial decisions, manage key delivery partners and bring internal teams together to resolve challenges and keep projects moving.

Your responsibilities

• Own project delivery: Lead a portfolio of BESS projects across the full lifecycle, taking responsibility for budgets, schedules, quality and risk.
• Lead grid connection: Drive applications and negotiations with DSOs and TSOs, coordinating technical requirements and connection milestones.
• Guide technical decisions: Oversee system sizing, technology selection, PCS specification and MV/HV integration with engineering teams.
• Lead procurement and negotiations: Manage tenders, evaluate proposals and negotiate commercial terms with EPCs, battery suppliers and service providers.
• Progress permitting: Coordinate with authorities, landowners and development teams to secure approvals and resolve obstacles.
• Oversee execution: Lead contractor coordination through construction, commissioning and handover to operations or asset management.
• Support commercial performance: Work with trading and optimisation partners to align project design with FCR, aFRR and arbitrage opportunities.
• Provide senior oversight: Report portfolio progress, present recommendations and escalation plans.
• Raise delivery standards: Improve project processes and share expertise across the team.

What you bring

• At least five years’ project management experience in BESS, renewables or energy infrastructure.
• A proven track record of delivering utility-scale BESS projects, with experience through construction and commissioning.
• Strong understanding of German grid-connection processes and the electricity market.
• Experience leading EPC contractors, suppliers and complex commercial negotiations.
• Sound technical and commercial judgement, with the ability to assess trade-offs and make clear recommendations.
• Confidence managing senior stakeholders and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
• Fluent German and English.

Experience that would help you stand out

• A degree in electrical engineering, energy engineering or a related discipline.
• Experience delivering standalone and hybrid PV-plus-storage projects.
• Knowledge of BESS revenue stacking, ancillary services and optimisation.
• A background in MV/HV substations or grid integration.
• PMP, PRINCE2 or a similar qualification.
