The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists supports the continued development and
study of the obstetric and gynecologic hospitalist model as one potential approach to improve quality
and patient safety, and to reduce the incidence of adverse events across delivery settings. The primary
goal of the OBGYN Hospitalist (OBH) is to care for the hospitalized obstetric patient, and to assist in
the management of obstetric events and emergencies.
During the days and times that the OBH is scheduled to provide services, the OBH will be physically
available, with no assigned tasks or responsibilities elsewhere, to assist in the management of any
patient on Labor and Delivery (L&D), postpartum or in the Emergency Department (ED), depending
on the acuity of L&D.
