A leading research organization in Aachen seeks students for a thesis to develop hybrid heating processes for recyclable sandwich panels. The candidate will create a numerical model for heating and validate it experimentally. Ideal applicants are studying mechanical engineering or computer science with skills in control engineering and CAD design. Flexible working arrangements are offered to combine study and work effectively.
The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (www.fraunhofer.com) currently operates 76 institutes and research institutions throughout Germany and is the world’s leading applied research organization. Around 32,000 employees work with an annual research budget of 3.4 billion euros.
At the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen, we work with more than 530 employees every day to make the production of the future more digital, more flexible and more sustainable. In the group Laser System and Heating Technology, we design and construct various prototype machines for laser-based and laser-assisted processes.
Within the scope of your thesis, you will develop the hybrid heating processes for recyclable mono-material sandwich panels (MMSP) consisting of a foam core sandwiched between cover panels. A numerical model will be developed to describe the transient temperature change along the thickness direction of MMSP during the heating process, in which both laser and IR radiation are used to heat the surface layers and foam core of MMSP to different temperatures. This increases the formability of the MMSP without causing the foam core to collapse. The model is experimentally validated by a real heating process of MMSP with temperature measurements at several locations.
