Job summary
ABB is seeking a Senior Power Electronics Engineer to lead high-power converter development for Critical Power in New Zealand, contributing across the full product lifecycle from concept to field support. You will drive design choices, validation, and IP initiatives while mentoring engineers and collaborating across multi-site teams.
The role emphasizes architecture definition, DFMEA, and compliance with UL, IEC, RoHS, REACH standards, with occasional travel and a strong focus on power quality
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering or Power Electronics with 8+ years of experience.
- Experience with SPICE, PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD or equivalent.
- Knowledge of power semiconductors, magnetics, filters, harmonics, thermal design and protection.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and development of high-power electronic converter systems, defining architectures and control strategies.
- Review and approve designs, simulations, and test plans, guiding multidisciplinary teams and mentoring engineers.
- Develop power converter topologies (VSI, CSI) for UPS and energy storage, including power stage design using IGBT, SiC, GaN.
- Lead modelling and simulation activities (SPICE, PLECS, MATLAB/Simulink, PSCAD) and define validation strategies.
- Lead root cause investigations and drive corrective actions for reliability improvements.
- Contribute to IP development and ensure compliance with UL, IEC, RoHS, REACH and customer requirements.
