Job summary

ABB Napier in New Zealand seeks a Chapter Lead to steer hardware design for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and UPS, advancing power conditioning technologies and ensuring robust engineering outcomes.

You will guide cross-functional R&D teams, develop test procedures, and support commissioning to deliver compliant, high-performance storage solutions across mission-critical applications.

Qualifications

• Strong background in Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and power converters >200kW.
• Minimum 5 years designing/maintaining power electronic systems within specialist teams.
• Solid understanding of three-phase systems and power electronics and integration into systems.
• Knowledge of grid codes, power quality, fault ride-through, and IEC/IEEE standards desirable.
• EMC fundamentals, heat management in electrical cabinets, and filtering/shielding.

Responsibilities

• Lead hardware design and development of BESS and UPS.
• Analyse and validate energy management systems, protection schemes, and power quality.
• Perform electrical design activities including cable/harness routing and protection device selection.
• Conduct functional, performance, and safety testing for BESS and UPS per IEC/UL standards.
• Develop and maintain technical docs, test procedures, and commissioning guides.
• Plan and execute system commissioning on customer sites and troubleshoot issues.
