Job summary

Roche is seeking a Senior Lab Automation Software Engineer to join the Data and Digital Catalyst CoE in Basel. You will bridge software and hardware, building high-throughput lab workflows, instrument drivers, and automation tools that enable unattended operation.

You will collaborate with automation scientists, software engineers, and hardware specialists to turn scientific processes into scalable architectures.

Qualifications

• 5 years of experience in software engineering and hardware integration.
• Experience programming liquid-handling or lab automation platforms and integrating robotic manipulators.
• Proficient in C# or Python for software and integration frameworks.
• Familiar with translating scientific needs into engineering solutions.

Responsibilities

• Design, program and troubleshoot high-throughput lab workflows.
• Build orchestration systems and instrument drivers for unattended operation.
• Implement logging, metrics, and alerts across hardware and software.
• Debug root causes with software or vision models rather than manual workarounds.
• Create a digital representation of the lab including samples and instrument state.
• Connect instruments via APIs and integrate with LIMS and ELNs.
• Manage hardware requirements and cell integration from design to deployment.
• Collaborate with software, automation scientists and hardware engineers.
